A postal worker who stole thousands of pounds from Royal Mail offices in Hemel Hempstead claims she took the cash to escape a forced marriage.

Rashda Bibi, 36, used her 'knowledge of the system' at the cash centre to take almost £121,000 in just three months during 2002.

St Albans Crown Court heard on Wednesday, March 18, that the mother of one stole the money to flee an unhappy marriage she had been forced into when she was 18.

Bibi had been working as a clerk at Crusader House, where her job was to oversee money received from banks and post offices.

But when pouches of cash arrived without a deposit slip to confirm the amount, Bibi would take out a share in £50 notes and complete the slip herself.

Prosecutor Warwick Tatford said in November 2002, for example, she took £11,000 from a pouch containing £32,000 and wrote £21,000 on its accompanying form.

The thefts came to light after Bibi's locker was searched in February 2003, revealing receipts for designer goods worth more than £1,000.

There was also a paying-in slip showing she had deposited £103,900 into a bank account.

The court was told that Bibi was arrested and her accounts frozen, but she fled her Hemel Hempstead home and went on the run.

She was not caught until February this year after she was finally
traced to an address in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Staffs, where she was found hiding in a loft.

Andrew Price, defending, said Bibi lived a simple life as a cleaner, trying to raise her young son.

Her plan, he said, had been to use the money to help her escape her marriage.

"There were no luxuries or lavish lifestyle," said Mr Price.

"The reason she had amassed the money was to escape a marriage which had been forced upon her at 18.

"She was not living it up in the way many breach of trust cases might."

On Wednesday, Bibi admitted 13 offences of theft and was jailed for 15 months.

Judge Stephen Warner told her: "You saw a weakness and you exploited it.

"These are serious offences involving a breach of trust on your part."

there is a different culture , RM would have you on a harassment charge for saying that ? , and a "honour" culture , she also may be playing the race card OR there will be plenty of legal people that would be quite happy to play it for her to justify their jobs .

Obviously the Judge has thought she was very devious and two wrongs don't make a right .

You don't need an excuse to rob a bank anymore nobody has any sympathy with them just walk in with your merry men and redistribute it after all it is all our money now!.

Can someone explain this to me. I don't understand it at all!

I don't know any Cleaners who can afford to spend over £1,000 on designer clothes. And if that's a simple life, then where have I been going wrong?!?
I can't afford ANY designer clothes!

Since when, have designer clothes stopped being a luxury?
Can any of you, afford to waste all that money on having designer clothes. When "off the peg" clothes are just as good (if a little less stylish)?

The only thing in that article which made any sense to me. Was that she said she needed a lot of money, to go on the run with her child, to escape her forced Marriage. But if that had been the case. Then why waste any of it on posh clothes?!?!?

As it said at the end of the article: It was a serious breach of trust on her part! So why did she get let off so lightly?
