A POSTWOMAN from Barns-ley has been recognised for her bravery after risking her life to rescue a 92-year old woman from a blazing house.

Jamie Whittaker, who has a deep fear of fire, put her feelings aside to rescue the pensioner, then put out the flames with a neighbour.

And, after waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Jamie calmly got back to work to complete her round of deliveries. She is among posties from across Yorkshire who won recognition at the Royal Mail's First Class People Awards.

Postman Lewis Thorpe from Doncaster was among the winners for regularly helping an elderly husband and wife who are not in the best of health.

All regional winners received £500 and will head to London for the national final on March 30.
