A ROYAL Mail sorting office that campaigners fought tirelessly to save will close this weekend.

Wotton-under-Edge sorting office will officially close on Saturday and the facility will be merged with a delivery depot in Cam.

Leader of the Save Our Sorting Office campaign Roger Carter said he was frustrated that they had lost the fight to save the facility and he felt they had been ignored by Royal Mail.

"The managers at Royal Mail have no feeling towards people, no feeling towards public service and no care for the environment," he said.

"I feel sorry for people in Cam because they are going to get all our fumes and traffic.

"I am frustrated that so many people worked hard on this campaign and it was done professionally, but Royal Mail never listened to us."

Mark Spencer, a Wotton postman, said: "We all compiled a good case to challenge Royal Mail about the closure, but we were not listened to, as they were just determined to close us down regardless.

"I would like to thank all the members of the SOSO campaign committee for all their hard work."

Royal Mail declined to comment.
