Mmmm a very interesting debate has formed here. The fact remains that if you go to live in a country you really should try to learn the language as much as you can. I'm of the opinion that those who go to, say, Spain to live should make the effort and learn and also mix with the locals. I myself do try to learn a little of the language if I can, on my travels, although this is probably easier with languages more closely related to your own. I have two cousins, brothers, born and raised in Manchester who left to live in Tenerife. One has a wife who is NOT very good at Spanish. I'm not sure about the other. The brothers speak pretty much fluent Spanish. There is a definate problem in this country with, mainly asian immigrants who choose not to learn. Remember, those from India and Pakistan are taught English in schools there. However, there is a real problem with the way the education is rationed. Many older females from muslim countries do not understand English. I am guessing that this is down to the way in which women in those societies are treated, as usually education for them is frowned upon. You only have to look to the situation in Afghanistan, where women are not allowed an education under the taliban. This devisive segregation of the population is wrong and only serves to hold back the people of those countries. It is also present in other muslim countries, because a career or education is not encouraged. I don't think there are many who are saying that these people, from whatever country they are from, should give up their language, culture, religion.
However, there is clear evidence that in some areas society is becoming an US and THEM situation. WE as the people born and bred in this country do not, and should not change. If people want to come here, fine, but play by the rules and don't try to insist that WE play by yours. We cannot allow a situation where English is an option, it is not. The UK has for generations, welcomed people from all over the globe but is now becoming a target for radicals, this must NOT be allowed to continue.

There's more than 500,000 British people living in Spain, hardly a small enclave.

Add: The British Ambassador to Spain has just been on BBC Breakfast TV, she said
that up to a million British people are living in Spain, though some of them only
part of the year.

Beside the point. However, an ever-reducing number of British OAPs living out their last few years in the sun could hardly be compared to people of all ages coming here to start a new life. Equally, those same 50/60/70 year olds only speaking a few words of Spanish isn't comparable to immigrants coming here (possibly as kids) and still refusing to speak English.
Heapsy makes some good points. :hmmmm

I don't think that kids refuse to learn English. They usually pick it up easily,
and often act as interpreters for parents who have difficulty learning the language.

I dont give a cr*p about his points! He serves the public end of! He is failing to do that end of! By his way of thinking Doctors, Nurses, FireService, PostalService, PoliceService and all the rest are intitled to say NO on the grounds of Language is this what WE have become a race of xenophobes? It is only a very short step to add race colour gender and all the rest of those bigoted ideas and i wont play any politicians games because they may fit in with my views or not! His job is to serve ALL the public and if he dont want too then SACK HIM and get someone in to do the job properly.

I couldn't agree more! If he owned or ran a Shop, rather than a Post Office (or any other type of Public Service). Then I would back him up 100%! But Public Services (and yes, I know that the Post Office is officialy a Business now, as is RM), should ALWAYS be available to ALL the Public. No matter WHO they are!!!!! :evil/mad :arrrghhh :evil/mad

They did the right thing, in removing him from his position. He brought disgrace to the Post Office. Although I think that sacking him was far too excessive. Surely it would have been better, to demote him. So he could still work, but not make any important decisions. :hmmmm

Now I know, that there are vast numbers of British ex-pats, who move abroad. And who don't make any effort to integrate into the Culture and Language of the Country they move to. Particularly the ones who move to Spain, and basically stick together, in their own little section. But that doesn't make it right, does it? :hmmmm

In fact, I'm ashamed of them. And always have been. They don't have sufficient loyalty to Britain, to live here. So they move abroad, for the better weather. But neither do they have enough loyalty to their new Country, to even learn the language! :d'oh! :arrrghhh :no no :arrrghhh

I don't think he has been sacked, the report on BBC website said he would be moved to another PO.

'Patriot' postie in job vow

THE Asian postmaster who said he was forced to leave his branch after banning customers who could not speak English vowed to reclaim his job yesterday.

Dad-of-two Deva Kumarasiri asked to be transferred from his post office for his “personal safety”, claiming he received threats from Muslims. But he predicted a “rebellion” from his loyal customers.

And the 40-year-old, who flies the Union Flag at his Nottingham home, said he would have to return to the Sneinton Boulevard branch to solve the “chaos” left by his departure.

Deva, who moved to the UK from Sri Lanka 18 years ago, said: “I introduced the ban as I wanted to improve the service.

“The majority of people support me — and they’re the ones who will suffer. I’ll fight to get back to my customers.”

The branch’s Muslim owner Riswan Raja, 27, denied threats to make his life “a living hell”.

But he said: “I didn’t want him working there. He upset a lot of customers.”

Councillor Deva has been thrown out of his local Lib Dem party.

A Post Office spokesman said: “Mr Kumarasiri moved offices at his own request.”

Whats the difference between a Papershop and a Sub Post Office both are service providers, if the Guy owned his Sub Office then he say what he liked in just the same way.

Agreed, totally unfair that a White middle class types have no say or isn't allowed any, all that pent up frustration will boil up, when British people explodes it would be a big thing, as a Nation we are slow to anger but when we do everybody should beware !, thats why I think he did have a point, I have no shame in being English first and British second and will wave the St Georges cross on April 23rd.
the Politically correct lentil eating lefties so called Communist socialist worker types are the real threat to British cohesion and good order, :no no a definition of a Fanatic IMO is somebody who goes through life with mouth open minds closed, they are castrating British pride for spurious political ideals, they should not be listened to, instead allow common sense to prevail.

the BNP are the other end of the extreme spectrum and are populist parties with no realistic policies.

All who are born here or immigrate, accepts and adopt British values are British in my eyes, those who reject our values and only seek to have British passport for convenience should be booted out immediately especially those who undermines Britain and act as a fith columnist for terrorists organisations.

Boris Johnson is going to mark St Georges day in a week long festival in London about time too, it will bring Tourist revenue from abroad and the UK, that Ken Livingtone is an arrogant slimy self serving sychophantic hypocrite, the tickets fiasco is the latest thing, he only got in because Londoners wanted to give Blair a bloody nose.

Going to relax this with a pint of Bombadier, Bishops finger and an Old speckled hen with Chicken balti Curry with sweet & sour chicken later on in the week, then a Roast beef dinner with roast Potatos on Sunday, how British is that ? :dance

I too, am proud to be English, and I'm also a British Citizen. But with the possible exception of the Beer, and the Beef (and I'm not even sure about them!). There's nothing British about your plans to relax. :hmmmm

As for those who don't embrace British Culture and Language, being kicked out. If we did that. We'd have to accept all the British ex-pats, back into Britain. And there's a large number of them. I don't know the statistics. But I doubt there are any less of them, than there are Immigrants, who fail to embrace Britain. :hmmmm

Britain has always been an amalgamation of different Cultures, and Countries. Right from the day it became a reality. So what exactly is your problem, with adding more Cultures to the fabric of British Culture? :hmmmm

English as a Language has multiple origins, it was the language of the Angles who invaded England, which incorporated worlds from Norman French, German, Spanish, Indian, Irish, Welsh, Italian, latin, African Languages, basically it is the language of the World, because of that it is wide spread through the influences of the British Empire and then the American Commercial Empire, ensuring that it now becomes the World Language, Shipping, Airlines, Business, Tourism, Banking now use it as a Lingua Francia between Countries.

Not bad for a language that had humble beginings as a minor language originating in the Russian Steppes before Migrating westward picking up words as it goes along.

Welsh had latin influences, which is why it differs from Scots and Irish Gaelic which are very similar to each other, Wales came from the Anglo Saxon word "wealeas" which means Foreigners.

Sometimes I have too much time on my hand lol.

I reckon in the near future (20 years) English may become the working language of the EU, its halfway there already.
