Whats the pay rate and conidtions of employment like comapred to Royal Mail ?

I remember seeing Postboxes round Ireland with the old royal cypher on them albeit painted green.

Can anyone remember tying bundles of letters with string and snapping the string around your hand, got it wrong and by god you knew about it. I was taught this as a Junior postman in '69, and can still do it, mind not at work.

My last basic was about 440 euros a week on days, similar to RM at the time, but now the pound is pretty much parity, it looks like great money. Overtime was time and half after two hours, and nights +20%. The thing is, there are no postcodes in Ireland, ( apart from a few basic ones in Dublin ), so there is no mech mail, so all the IPS was done at night.

I don't think there are too many vultures looking for a share of An Posts' business, because it is too rural, so there won't be too many UK Mails juggonaughts trundling through Limerick or Cork just yet.
They have no problem screwing around in NI but I do doubt that they will ever try their own delivery networks over here (apart from Belfast maybe).

Done my training at Kings x too circa 1984 as a young lad. Much more thorough than today, inward and outward sorting, and the cards, never thought i`d pass them. The knot to tie the bundles was simple and efficient, if we still had string in my office i`d use it instead of bands.

I was a telegram boy at Sutton in Surrey back in the 1960s and remember that in the sorting office all the sorting racks had, in each position, a large roll of string and a razor sharp hook attached to the desk (not so hot on health and safety in those days). When a batch of letters needed securing there was a very easy and fast method of bundling them, knotting the string and then cutting it on the hook. All GPO staff were taught how to tie this useful knot.

The beauty of the knot was that it could be tightened by a simple pull before cutting and a looped bow allowed for easy undoing of the knot.

From the amount of elastic bands I find on my driveway I reckon that this is not now current practice as I'm sure people use to find lengths of string on their drives instead.

Does anyone remember how to tie that knot?
Cheers
Mike

I work in Rathbone Pl W1 we've still got some of the old hooks on the old 48 box frames and there is some new safe blades enclosed in plastic but it's so hard to get string anymore but there is some who do get string and keep it in they're lockers.
Just had a resign with the duties allocated to those who didn't sign and it seems that all the old frames are being replaced with the 2000 frames causing chaos as the frame sections are not big enough and theres work being stacked in piles all over the place, carefull planning by management as usual :arrrghhh

You are lucky, I was singing fasetto one day after cutting the string on that hook :coolr
