Motorists will be able to apply for 10-year photographic driving licences at their local post office under a new five-year contract between the DVLA and the Post Office, which will allow drivers to have their photos taken, applications scanned and signatures captured at more than 750 branches from next year.
The information will then be sent through to the DVLA, which will post the licences to customers.
The move will be seen as an attempt to appease Labour MPs opposed to plans to part-privatise Royal Mail. Lord Mandelson, the business secretary, has said he is keen to widening the range of services post offices can offer.
Alan Cook, the Post Office's managing director, said the company would be well placed to take on future government contracts, including applications for ID cards.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
