I hope this idea spreads. Imagine trying to get served in a pub in Sawnsea and the barman refusing until you ask in Welsh. Or, you nip into a grocers in Glasgow and they don't serve you unless you ask in Gaelic.

Mr Kumarasiri said he could not serve people if he did not understand them

A postmaster from Nottingham who refused to serve customers who could not speak English has left his job.

Sri-Lankan born Deva Kumarasiri, who worked at the sub office on Sneinton Boulevard, made the national news after announcing his policy.

He had claimed non-English speakers frustrated other customers and made it difficult to do his job properly.

But managers at the Post Office said the service was for all and they were concerned about the impact on trade.

There were also reports that Polish migrants had been boycotting the branch.

Abida Raja, whose family runs the branch, said they had to take action. He said: "It was my brother's decision because obviously he was very upset by those comments, because we're losing customers because of it.

"He had to do something about it, because obviously we don't feel that way about anyone else, we don't discriminate against any customer coming in, because obviously the customers keep the business going."

Mr Kumarasami's policy had also been criticised by the Racial Equality Council and MP for Nottingham East, John Heppell.

Mr Heppell said: "This was a little bit strange. What do you do with tourists?

"If I was abroad and if someone refused to sell me a stamp because my French or German was not good enough, I think I would have every right to be offended and I suspect people in this country would be offended by what this man was doing."

Mr Kumarasiri had told the BBC he had turned away about six customers who had wasted his time and annoyed other customers by not being able to understand English.

He had said: "I am part of a service but how can I serve them if I don't understand what they are asking for?

"When I came to England I obeyed the British way of life, I got into the British way of life.

"That is what I ask everyone else to do - respect the country where you are working and living."

He does however raise a point about integration and cultural assimilation, he could have gone about it better tho, he did also say that as long as we (whites) are surpessed from having a debate and doing something constructively about it, all that frustration will build up and qill explode when it does it willl be nasty, these do gooders that supresses debate are no better than the KGB and will reap what they sow.

By his way of thinking Doctors, Nurses, FireService, PostalService, PoliceService and all the rest are intitled to say NO on the grounds of Language is this what WE have become a race of xenophobes? It is only a very short step to add race colour gender and all the rest of those bigoted ideas and i wont play any politicians games because they may fit in with my views or not! His job is to serve ALL the public and if he dont want too then SACK HIM and get someone in to do the job properly.

I can only speak English and not very well does it mean if i can not understand all 168 languages of the world i should not have a job even though i try my best in understanding but we all have our job's target's set by those above :lfo & :cfo and now :mfo it would seam we are all being divided by more than religion or language but TIME we don't get the time to know and understand one another or is this lost in translation!.

I am refering to integration, cultural assimilation, loyalty to your Country born or naturalised, these are the things that I want to see, we cannot allow this Nation to be split along ethnic and linguistic lines, that way lies trouble.

as in USA all Immigrants are told to leave their Country behind and become Americans, same for here, I don't care what religion, langauage or race you are, you become British 110%, they may open Curry houses, kebabs shops, churches and mosque, what they must not do is supress other ethnic groups and create a mini state here, Sharia law, Forced marriages and "honour" killings has no place here, all Immigrants must and should speak English, Sikhs are very good at integrating and their charitable works are on par with the Salvation Army and they give assistance to all races and religion,they do not insist we should change to suit them, as to Tourist we can be understanding, we British are known for our helpfulness and welcome to Tourists, even they do make an effort to learn a few words, like I do when I travel to other Countries.

Anyone not supporting this Country such as the Muslims heckling at the Royal Anglian march, mad mullah preachers, radical terrorists organisations, they should all be deported straight away, no ifs or buts, anyone trying to sneak into this Country in the back of lorries should be sent straight back to France as that is the first safe Country and should claim there !

The UNITED Kingdom should be just that, United Citizens of all backgtounds supporting this Country, Democracy, rule of Law and British values, we are certainly not a Nation of xenophobes, we all have valid fears and concerns.

If they are not prepared to they do have the option of not remaining and going to a nation that is more to their liking, I am sick and tired of pandering and wimping to the demands of vocal immigrants that demands we should change to suit them, they should change to suit us and ENGAGE with us.

When Brits settle abroad in countries where English isn't the main language (eg Spain),
they do tend to group together, open their own pubs, hairdressers, cafes, restaurants etc.,
and employ British builders, plumbers, and other people who can speak English. They generally
socialise with other Brits. Most do not learn to speak the language. In the UK they would be
referred to as an unassimilated immigrant ghetto, but they would regard themselves as an
'expat community'.
It is difficult for many people to learn a new language, especially as they get older. I was quite
good at languages at school, usually coming first or second in the class at German, and doing
quite well in French too. But a couple of years back I went to evening class to learn Spanish,
and found it impossible. Probably partly due to age - it's easier to learn a language when you
are young, but also due to different teaching methods now, When I was at school we were taught
grammar, verbs (different tenses), adjectives and nouns, and how to put them together. Now
languages are taught in a conversational manner, which I certainly found hard to follow.
I think it would be difficult for a lot of older people coming to a new country to pick up the
language. But their children will be just as fluent as everyone else.
I think this guy is just out for some publicity and votes.

He is paid to provide a service to people by the people of the UK! Not if or unless you can speak English or not! That is not his choice he runs a public POST OFFICE and that service DEMANDS he or she sells Post Office Counter products and or services to the public! Even Leighton and Crozier would not condone the non sale of products and or services to NON English speaking people, and yet here we have normal sane plain speaking members thinking its ok to run a service like ours on the basis of if we like and or agree with someone else you can have it but if not f*ck off! WHF is that about? Are you really saying its OK for this? I have a few OAPs that cant string one word together let alone what they want so shall i f*ck em off? i deliver to some special needs people should i do the same to them as well? I am NOT disputing that he should continue to provide a service, same here I also deliver to disabled people without question, that is not the point of his stance, its linguistics, he didn't mention anything about disability, I do agree he is a Politician who is giving a few sound bites and is probably planning to leave the PO Office anyway, he does however did publicise a valid point that everybody is concerned about, however like I said in my previous post, he could have gone about it in a better way not grabbing for votes.

What I DO agree on is the general point about fitting in and accepting the Country you are living in, you know as well as I do, I have absolutely NO issues with delivering to disabled, OAP, foreign residents, its our job endex, when delivering to Foreigners, tourist etc It would obviously makes it a lot easier for me to communicate with them if they do have a knowledge of English, this is the big problem with ethnic minorities, the ghetto themselves off from mainstream society in refusing to learn English, this will inevitabley create a Country within a Country with no loyalty to the United Kingdom, as we have seen with prominent home grown Muslim terrorist activites here in London and protests against our Soldiers coming from the Middle east, if integration was a requirement for British Citizenship we wouldn't be having this problem much less talking about it.

This worked in the USA, I have been there and seen it in action, many Ethnics fly the US flag higher than their the flag of the home Country.

When I travel to other Countries I ALWAYS make an attempt to learn a few words of their language, I always make an effort because I am representing the United KIngdom and its important for me to make a positive impression, we are not all union jack short wearing BNP piss heads, even in China I learnt Madarin and Cantonese as well as reading Chinese writings, not much but enough to get around and make friends, China regards the UK as the "Land of the Gentlemen" as do most Countries outside Europe, so its down to us help them to continue to think that way.

Do you think that people in a front line role should have a good grasp of spoken English? and to be able to be understood by there customers, because I can tell you that we have people out on deliveries who the linguists at Bletchley park would have trouble understanding there English, if you think that this is right then fair play to you I respect your view, but I doubt very much if I would be given a posties job in Spain if I couldn't be understood in Spanish

Totally agree with NW postie. Immigration is out of control over here now. Comparing the small enclave of ex pats in Spain with several towns/areas of England being totally taken over by ghettos of foreigners unable/unwilling to learn the language is ridiculous.
