Royal Cypher Question

Post by brothermagrew »

My Delivery Office is in Scotland and as far as I am aware all vans should therefore be endorsed with the Crown of Scotland on the driver's doors. Happened to notice this morning that a new van has arrived at our DO but has the Royal Cypher of Queen Elizabeth II surmounted by the St. Edward's Crown.

In other words E II R on the driver's door. Surely this cannot be right as the DO and van are in Scotland. Are there any hardfast rules about this?

Why shouldn't you have ER on the vans? She's your Queen, same as ours, isn't she? Still part of the UK aren't you?

For now :Very Happy

to be Pendantic she really is Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland, the First (|English) Queen is only of England up to the Border of Scotland as her Cousin is Queen Mary I of Scotland, her son later became King James IV of Scotland but is James I of England later after Queen Elizabeth I of England dies childless.

Pendant mode off :Very Happy

For convenience sakes Elizabeth II is used throuout the Kingdom and the Realms beyond the seas, Queen Elizabeth II of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, amonsgt various colonies and overseas dependencies, where she is recognised as a Head of State including Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar, Turk & Caicos island, Pitcairn, Falkland Island, etc

None of them has any Problems with her Titles or types of Crown used, in an Independent Scotland I believe Mr Salmond of the SNP intends to retain a consitutional Monarchy in which case they may chose to style her Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland with a Scottish Crown, if they so choose and Her Majesty is willing to accept, I would imagine she has no issues with that after all she has a private home in Balmoral and loves Scotland.

Now on with solving real world problems, not navel gazing.

There are actually 2 different crowns for the monarch (there may be more with the former colonies but could not be bothered searching).

Scottish Crown or sometimes called "The Honours of Scotland" Image and the English Crown Image which will explain why there are different cyphers in the two countries.

Mary's son was actually James VI of Scots and not Scotland nor the IV as you titled him :Very Happy

James IV of Scots died on Flodden field after getting skelped by the English when he went to help out his french pals.
Becoming King or Queen in Scotland gives you the title of Scots and not Scotland as the land does not belong to them but to the people of Scotland.

Okay, you can get back to the real world again :Very Happy

yes James VI , later James I and knighted everybody all the way down to London to claim the English throne, sounds like our Tony with his cash for honours and his sidekick Brown.

Maybe so brother, but when it also arrives with the incorrect no smoking sticker (south of the border) version, which unfortunately does not comply with the Scottish legislation then it does becomes a problem.

In Scotland to comply with the legislation:
The minimum signage requirement under the new law for any relevant vehicles is a ‘No Smoking’ notice which:
• States that the vehicle is no-smoking and that it is an offence to smoke there or knowingly to permit
smoking there.
• Displays the international ‘No Smoking’ symbol.
• Displays the holder of a particular post (e.g. the manager) to whom a complaint may be made by anyone
who observes someone smoking.
