Together they are greater than the sum of their parts.
If they start splitting up, then they all will become weaker, less afficient and much less nicer places to live.

And dont forget that the the greatest superpower of the last century, and the only superpower of this century is USA/UK.

I expct some of you will laugh at that but it remains a fact. The USA and Gt Britain make up the dominant power of the world.

Of course, they are not equal partners. Only a fool would pretend that. Up until WW11 Britain was the senior partner and USA the junior. After WW11, USA became the senior partner.
Agreed for a small Nation we punched above our weight, how else did we manage to control 1/4 of the globe, stood against germany twice even when other might have advocated surrender, was an international innovator of technology, Industrial and financial powerhouse.
some of the glory has faded somewhat, the thing we still have is the British Character, which must not be allowed to be eroded by political correctness.

..'I know this seems anti-sottish( and I suppose it is, just that I've had to put up with the racist and sectarian views that come with being an Englishman in Scotland)'

I dont think that your post could in anyway be construed as anti Scottish,it's refreshing to read a well argued post,as to whether Scotland could afford to go on it's own, well the events of the last few months, have certainly made the case for the union, the arc of prosperity has turned into an act of insolvency, theres been riots in Iceland, whch has had to go to the IMF for funding,(the conditions to such funding will result in real hardship to the ordinary citizen in iceland),huge marches in Dublin,so IMHO the economic case has been seriously damaged,at the moment the UK is looking over the edge of a precipice, and it looks like we are about to step off.
But paradoxally it seems that has'nt put folk off voting for the SNP,as witnessed by the recent council by election in Dundee,(a gain from New Labour),but on the other hand the most recent opinion poll gives New Labour a lead in voting intentions for both Hollyrood and Westminster,it all seems to be in a state of flux at the moment.
As to the racist and sectarian views all I can say is sorry, that you met bawbags like that, and they are not representative of the Scottish people in general, the sectarian views are in my opinion on the retreat in Scotland compared with the 60's
The more you know, the worse it gets.

That would be solved by Independence as there would be no Scottish Mps in Westminster.

Mind you looking at this map of the results of the 2005 election the Conservatives would be hard to beat in England/Wales
