no pouch boxes - can i use shops? is this legal?
hi all, im thinking of stopping driving my personal car on my walk, there is only 1 pouch box on my walk and on asking the floater what does he do, he says he uses any of a couple of shops to store the mail, well i just want to know is, is this legal?, what i mean is to become a postman u have to pass criminal records checks etc, whereas if this mail is left in a shop, anyone could be employed or get access to it, it is surely uninsured. On previous walk i was on, the delivery didnt have pouch boxes so a taxi office was used to sort the mail. very dodgy indeed in my eyes.

thanks for thye telling off. pretty much every 1 in my office uses their own cars, even on my training week i was expected to use my car as the guy on the walk did and i was trained to do his duty via the car, only on reading on this site im getting information how much royal mail creams off car drivers. And the post was about using shops as no pouch boxes, not i drive my car shoot me! lol

yes we have bag drops in shops, it's all above board as long as it is done properly all the paper work and they are registered to be a bag drop with the office etc
good point with having shops as bag drops is when it's a bad day weather wise you can get a warm up!

The answer you're looking for is - No, Postcon are very specific about the security of the mail but if you really want you could e-mail them yourself and ask them the question info@psc.gov.uk

Its up to your manager to sort out safe bag drops as he has to various checks on them. Security H&S etc, but you are allowed to use them when approved I use 3 on my walk and a local taxi firm as well if needed.tragictramp wrote:hi all, im thinking of stopping driving my personal car on my walk, there is only 1 pouch box on my walk and on asking the floater what does he do, he says he uses any of a couple of shops to store the mail, well i just want to know is, is this legal?, what i mean is to become a postman u have to pass criminal records checks etc, whereas if this mail is left in a shop, anyone could be employed or get access to it, it is surely uninsured. All safe drops should receive a payment from Rmail to help defer costs etc, so if you do want to start using them have a friendly word with the owners but leave the paperwork and details to your manager.

The population of my town is approx 75,000, total number of pouch boxes = 2 (which are on private ground, 1 - an ex-councillors front garden, 2 - a lineos back garden)
RM need planning permission for pouch boxes and a lot of councils refuse

crikey, that isnt much. planning permission is needed, as the footing has to be sunk into the councils land. the one that was put up a few years ago which i thought was around 2004 but seems a bit longer. nobody knew what it was for a while lol. think it is a metal post sunk into concrete. could go for walk and have a look lol.

had my little walk lol. yeah its still there..
the box is about 800 x 400 on top of metal piece sunk into the ground. not sure where the others are, i'll ask around. probably it will come under council rates system somewhere. cant imagine they could put a council tax charge on them lol.
