Taxman's £4.5m deal with firm which lost personal details of 25m

The company blamed for losing the personal details of 25million child-benefit claimants has retained its £4.5million-a-year contract with the taxman.

Under the new deal, Dutch-owned TNT will continue to deliver internal mail for HM Revenue and Customs for another 12 months despite the high-profile blunder in 2007.

The deal will attract further controversy as TNT last week admitted it had been forced to hand over tens of millions of pounds in unpaid tax after its staff illegally falsified documents.

Earlier this year, the company also lost sensitive information on 2,000 British Council employees, and last year it mislaid details of a million emergency calls to the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Last night, HMRC refused to discuss why it had awarded the contract to TNT, citing ‘customer confidentiality’. TNT, which is tipped to take a stake in the Royal Mail if Government plans to part-privatise the service go ahead, also refused to discuss the contract.

But a Communication Workers’ Union official said: ‘After being involved in the loss of such data, it is incredible that TNT should be considered for such a contract.’

Of course, if it had been Royal Mail who had lost all this data-H.M.R. C. would have crucified us in the press.
Llike the Banks the Government seems to be rewarding negligence, and bad company practice-Dodgy Deals all round.
