New 4 Hour duty
Ok, we started this new 4 hour duty last week, and so far, its an absolute farce, it just doesnt work. fact. having only been here 5 months, I got landed with a reserve duty, so im on this walk for a week while the permanent guy is on holiday. Im a 32.5 hour contract, starting at 7:30. he is the ridiculous part, I come in at 7:30 with no mail boxed in and expected to be out the door at 9:30, which is an absolute joke. tuesday is about the only day i get out and at that time. the other thing is its a shared van duty, which requires all the packets to be taken out. so im still boxing in at 10:30 this morning and the other guy waiting to go out. the duty manager doesnt know what to do, just a shambles. came back to today and mail still lying as people ony want to work to there time, which to be honest, is quite right. the duty managers pushed and pushed for this and now weve got it, its bollocks, doesnt work. hope your bonus was worth it

Re: New 4 Hour duty
I think some people are but consider this. You approach your manager and say there is a national agreement that I should only be doing a 3.5 hour duty. Not an extended 4 hour one. The manager then says its a local agreement, or thats not true, or a number of other different things that make you question your own sanity. He then threatens to suspend you for not doing what he might suggest was a reasonable request.rural 3 wrote:3.30 del span for fukd sake is nobody listening out there-NATIONAL AGREEMENTS
I am with you on this but you must also consider people are also scared of their managers/scared of losing their jobs. The problem with the CWU is that some offices are more 'militant' than others. What if you work in a very weak office?
I have already been through the RM procedure (when they want you out) and its not very pleasant.
Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

3.30 del span is the max on over the shoulder deliveries, were vans, HCT(high capacity truck) or other delivery methods that don't rely on weight on your back then they can go over the current 3.30. Thats been agreed by CWU, 3.30 - 4.15 depending on whats being used. I am afraid the 3.30 only delivery is a thing of the past, were gonna be expected to do longer as weight comes of the back and indoor work reduces.3.30 del span for fukd sake is nobody listening out there-NATIONAL AGREEMENTS

This of course will mean most likely people being forced to use these things even when the walks are unsuitable. and
how on earth will they be transported to the first drop off point?

I vehemently dispute that...Please point us in the direction of national agreement which states this.AndyK wrote:3.30 del span is the max on over the shoulder deliveries, were vans, HCT(high capacity truck) or other delivery methods that don't rely on weight on your back then they can go over the current 3.30. I understand that longer delivery spans will eventually be agreed by the cwu...but as far as I am aware none has been agreed as yet. I have consulted cwu at area level on this.

Re: New 4 Hour duty
The CWU thing about the 4hr delivery was that there were some trials somewhere,h&s were involved, and it was noted that a 4hr del with a HTC gave less fatigue than a normal bag/pouch box 3-30 del.
There is no official agreement between RM and the CWU regarding 4hr deliverys,Bob Gibson is all for the 3-30 hr delivery to stay,at least for the moment .

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

And four hours out without a toilet is asking for trouble not too mention fatigue.POSTMAN wrote:The CWU thing about the 4hr delivery was that there were some trials somewhere,h&s were involved, and it was noted that a 4hr del with a HTC gave less fatigue than a normal bag/pouch box 3-30 del.

Re: New 4 Hour duty
your correct to say there is no agreement, however in principal your beloved area rep would agree to duties over 3.30 if the correct delivery methods were used or they split a delivery so it not a continuous delivery over 3.30 this comes from div reps as part of phase 3. Also look at van sharing duties they are 4.15 even the (unagreed) guidance notes say 4.15. So if your presented with proposals that take H&S and new delivery methods into account with duties over 3.30 they will be agreed by your area rep. (apart from at the moment were no proposals are being agreed until a new modernisation agreement is negotiated).

Re: New 4 Hour duty
My point is 3.30 continuous is max for over the shoulder and will remain, however look at van sharing, split deliveries, bullshit geo route revisions, lapsing etc all mean longer than 3.30, I also attended a meeting with area reps, div reps, RM managers and local reps to discuss deliveries over 3.30 as part of phase3 (north Lancs. /Cumbria) i.e. split deliveries use of new equipment. Dispute all you like. Fact longer deliveries are being agreed.
Introduction.
Following various discussions the CWU and Royal Mail in the North East of England agreed that there could be a joint benefit of introducing a trial of car derived deliveries in the XXXXX Delivery Office. Therefore both parties have agreed the following terms of reference / guidelines for the trial.
Background.
XXXXX Delivery office has been planning a Geo-route revision over the past few months with one section going live, and further sections to going live on a section by section basis. Within the Geo-route revision it has been highlighted that car-derived deliveries could be introduced as a trial as part of the Geo-route revision in the XX 7 section
Car-Derived Delivery span.
For the purpose of this trial both parties have agreed that because these duties will be delivering all packets and special deliveries the actual attendance time is over the 1.7% allocated in the Geo-route system. As such the delivery span for the car-derived delivery spans will be 4 hours 15 minutes taking cognisance of the need to identify short walks of 20 minutes between moving the van to different points of the delivery. The National Delivery Specification for last letter delivered of 14.00 and 15.00 for rural areas will be adhered to.
