PEOPLE across Bolton have been subjecting themselves to weird and wacky ordeals as the town is gripped by Red Nose Day fever.
The annual Comic Relief appeal kicked off yesterday with events ranging from scuba diving to imprisonment in the name of charity.
People ditched their uniforms and workwear in favour of crazy costumes, while schools and businesses held events and competitions to raise money to combat world poverty.
At Sainsbury’s in Trinity Street, manager Jane Burgen was “jailed” in a cage at the front of the store.
She was sponsored £30 for every hour she spent in the prison, and was not allowed out, even to go to the toilet.
She said: “I was in there for more than two hours, but it was for a good cause.”
Children at St Stephen and All Martyr’s School, Darcy Lever, did a sponsored climb on a climbing wall inspired by the celebrities who conquered Kilimanjaro.
Pupils and staff at Lord’s Independent School in Manchester Road turned their school building into a giant face with hair, eyes, ears and a huge red nose.
Children and adults alike enjoyed fancy dress, styling themselves as characters as diverse as Bob the Builder, Simon Cowell and Tina Turner.
Youngsters at Hocus Pocus Nursery in The Haulgh danced non-stop for two hours dressed in the style of their parents’ favourite music.
Deputy manager Vicky Baron said: “The kids are very tired, but they all enjoyed it. Some of them weren’t too keen on being dressed as rappers and hippies, but one of the girls was really happy to be Tina Turner.”
Ladywood School in Little Lever ran its own X-Factor-style talent show, complete with staff playing the role of the celebrity judges.
Staff at Rose Court care home in Water Street, Radcliffe, had their faces painted and organised games and raffles for the residents, while unlucky managers at the Royal Mail centre in Farnworth were locked up in stocks.
In Westhoughton Leisure Centre, the local British Sub-Aqua Club invited people to dive wearing their red noses, and donated some of their fee to the charity.
Chairman Michael Hulmes said: “Everyone really enjoyed it, and hopefully it will recruit some new members to the club as well.”
