AS THE Government handed over billions of taxpayers’ money to failed bankers, they assured the public they would not allow executives to take huge bonuses but said nothing about pensions.

When the media revealed Sir Fred Goodwin of the calamitous RBS had been awarded a lifetime pension of £703K a year, Prime Minister Gordon Brown reacted to public outrage claiming he knew nothing about it. We now know the deal was approved by his own minister.

While millions of hardworking taxpayers bailed out his company and saw their own life savings decimated, Sir Freddy took away a pension pot of £16m (without public funding Sir Fred’s pension was worth just £700,000).

Meanwhile Government-owned Royal Mail saw fit to pay £6m into its executive pension scheme while postal workers are left with a pension deficit of almost £9billion.

Closer to home the new Cheshire East Authority is reporting a budget overspend of 240 per cent, while handing out financial deals to executives that ordinary workers could never imagine, and all funded by the public purse.

No sign of belt tightening or sacrifice from that quarter. No acknowledgement that those who must foot the bill are facing the worst economic crisis of their lives.

So when disgruntled workers go on strike, let’s not forget how it all started.

When the bins aren’t emptied and the mail doesn’t arrive, let’s remember the example set at the top. The total lack of empathy, the casual indifference to the plight of others, the disingenuous excuses and the arrogance that infuriated hard pressed taxpayers.
