A POSTAL worker has been suspended amid allegations that thousands of pounds worth of items had been stolen from mail.
The worker at the Canterbury Street depot in Blackburn is under investigation by his employers after being suspended last Friday.
Post men and women working from the depot said they had been under increased surveillance for months after numerous incidents of mail going missing, mainly from the special delivery safe, but also from ordinary post.
The Lancashire Telegraph has been contacted by five different postal workers, who all alleged that up to £20,000 worth of items had gone missing from mail. They said the worker suspended was not a post man or woman.
But the Royal Mail declined to confirm or deny any of the allegations put to it by the Lancashire Telegraph.
The police have not been informed. But once the internal investigation is complete a file is expected to be passed to officers to investigate.
One postal worker said: “In all my years as a postman I’ve never known anything like this before.
“We had all been reporting things going missing for months, and we’ve all been under suspicion.
“Lots of people have been called into the head office, including myself, to try and find the thief.
“Only a couple of weeks ago £2,000 went missing out of a registered letter.”
Another said: “We’re all shocked at how much seems to be taken - no-one’s ever seen anything like this before.”
The Royal Mail confirmed it was investigating an allegation of theft of mail and that a worker had been suspended.
A police spokesman said they had not yet been officially informed about the alleged thefts.

It doesn't leave many others who would have access to the locker.

Blackburn is not too far away from me but I haven't heard anything = we are on the same hub.
