Falling mail volumes

Post by DGP1 »

With the constant talk about falling mail volumes and how we need to cut hours because of it something was niggling me but I think I worked out what it was - Since SDD my office has had no increase in budget for the increase in new houses and mail volumes in general but now with the supposed reduction we're being told to cut hours because of it. Has any other office had an increase since SDD or is it just cuts everywhere without thought. :mad

PS. I still don't see any reduction in volumes in my DO and TBH I can't believe the MC figures because all their mail is mixed together (flats and letter together) and the fact that they say that a tray only holds 200 letters whenever it's usually 50% more when counted.

This is my pet subject and posted lots of similar threads, only last week Posted running out of Mail Thread.
Our area till the credit Crunch Had massive House building I will say no more but massive. The increae in mail forgetting packets has been fornominal!

We use to get O/T for new houses and devolopments now all in normal duties. But forgetting new devolpments the increase in mail in our office is substantial.I Beleive if any one stood up and said mail volumes were decling in our office ,they would be lynched.Till today Tuesday were the only quiet day we had, saturdays now normal day more like a thursday or friday,Today again was like a busy thurs or friday.

I beleive ,but have yet to get it clarrified,Stamped mail is Decling wich I totally agree with,How much stamped mail do you handle ,proably very little,so THEIR FORE
STAMPED MAIL IS DECLING DRAMATICLY=FALLING VOLUMES OF STAMPED MAIL so RM ARE TELLING THE TRUTH.

OH Please do not mention DSA wich is increasing substantialy ,mail sort seems to be increasing .The amount of Flats and catoluges also increasing +packets.

Dont why Rm ARE ONLY TELLING 1/2 TRUTHS.

Errr, no. Stamped mail has been declining for years, but all mail has been declining dramatically in the last couple of years.

Dont why Rm ARE ONLY TELLING 1/2 TRUTHS.
Our MC is now contemplating axing the early processing shift due to falling mail volumes, and others are too. That's quite a few MC posties who won't agree with you.

They're not counting our so called competitors mail which we are doing the last mile with so mail is up for those that deliver it and down for you mc staff.
I get really p***off when people tell me my job is easy'er due to falling volumes and yes we had this rammed down our throats this morning even though we are a DO.

I'd rather have Lockheed deliver the mail than ride around in a plane built by the post office

Doesn't matter about the final mile, if it's got a code mark on it it's been through an MC, so therefore it's been counted in the processing totals for the MC.

DSA mail is still processed by RM automation.

Not disputing that letter traffic has declined but i do think Royal Mail have exagerated the loss. When we used to perform WLA by weight in delivery offices Royal Mail were saying we were overstating traffic by up to 17% now we perfom MIST and traffic recording in Mail centres they conviently include the loss of traffic which they previously said was never there in the first place.

With regards to fulfilment traffic this has definately increased packets etc and the time for delivery ie the time for knocking on doors etc has not been properly taking into account as the panning value in geo route for waiting has been reduced.

Not even prepared, unless picking it up palletized from firms and delivering it to the local MC counts as preparation.
Good scheme, this liberalised postal market......

Forget figures, forget packets, simple test by any walking postman who has been in the job any lenght of time,R WE GETTING BUSIER,AND DELIVERING MORE MAIL THAN IN PREVIOUS YEARS?
i can tell you all the guys in our office say how much busier we are now than use to be,esapecialy saturdays.
so where has all this extra mail come from?
Some saturdays we have no mail sort ,all the mail sort is pumped out Fridays,Saturdays we seem to have loads opf DSA,USE TO BE A QUIET DAY,NOW FOR PAST YEAR IS A BUSY DAY?
how come when mail is declining.?

Our office is getting less mail on weekdays.Large especially is down.
Saturdays are crap though, loads of TNT etc.
They do make the figures up though. One day its 20k and the next day when you don't have much at all they say 28k.I don't think they know what they are on about
Packets and rec's/SD's are well up though. This means that deliverys still take what they used to.Knocking on doors slows you even if letters are down.

Here we go again, same old same old......

"My bag's heavier.....walk takes longer.......I know 'cos I'm a DO postie.......... you're lying.......RM's lying.......figures are fiddled"......as infinitum, and all wrong.

Ask around at your parent MC where the real work goes on. Not many MCs that haven't seen a big drop in Early shift processing, although they'd be lying too, no doubt. :whistle
In fact, wasn't it you who said you're from the PO area? Strange that, 'cos they're one of the MCs considering dropping Early shift processing due to lack of mail. Of course, they'd be lying too if you asked them....

With the I just dont know or care! LOL
.

Sadly, that's more than likely true.
Even more unfortunate is the fact that we share employer and union, and at some time in the future we'll all be balloted for IA, and then you'll have to make a decision based on neither knowing nor caring about the desperate situation "our" employer currently finds itself in.

"Ask around at your parent MC where the real work goes on."

I don't doubt that there is a lot of work done in the MC's, but that is a pretty stupid statement. By your own view point, mail volumes are falling, therefore you have less work to do. From the point of view of a delivery postie, the amount of work has increased whether volumes have fallen or not
