Postal workers strike over reduced hours

THIRTY postal workers in Edmonton went on strike because a “farcical” change to reduce working hours means senior managers are now sorting mail and postal workers are struggling to finish their rounds.

Communication Workers Union (CWU) representative Mark Dolan said residents will notice delays in receiving mail because of the change.

According to the CWU, all 30 staff at the Leeds Street sorting office turned out as usual at 5.30am on Saturday, but instead of working held a four-hour demonstration outside while senior managers from as far away as Watford were drafted in to cover their shift.

The workers were protesting at Royal Mail’s introduction of a 35-hour working week for three new workers from last week, saying it was imposed upon them.

Mr Dolan said: “I believe in the future they will be looking to make jobs part-time and we have taken stringent action to protect services and our members.

“The job can’t be done in the time. Yesterday three people started at 8am and were paid until 2.30pm. One of them was still walking around at 4pm and one was working until 3pm.

“Some people in Edmonton are going to get mail later and some may not get it at all. Some postal workers will work longer and claim it on overtime and others will just stop and bring their work back to the office.

“The sorting is now sometimes being done by the managers. They are doing our jobs and we are working part-time. It is completely farcical.”

Mr Nolan said the general manager for north and east London was among those having to make the 20,000 normal and special deliveries usually made to homes and businesses in Edmonton, a move which would have cost Royal Mail “a lot of money”.

He said: “They would have been paid managers’ rates and some of the senior managers couldn’t claim overtime so they would have got days off in lieu.”

“The fact is that Royal Mail has relied for far too long on the goodwill of postal workers, many of whom make deliveries using their own cars, and now they are trying to use that goodwill and get us to work for nothing.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail denied all staff took strike action.

He said: “We are making minor changes to the hours of three new posts at the delivery office and this will not affect any of the existing permanent employees at Upper Edmonton — these changes are part of our drive to become more efficient, improve the service to customers and are within national guidelines consulted on and agreed by staff and unions.”

Now they are threatening the new worker with non renewal of contract if they can not show a seasoned worker up and save the business thousands of pounds.

Delivery workers in Upper Edmonton, north London, are in a militant mood following a successful strike last Saturday. Leading CWU union activists say their action could soon spread across London.

Royal Mail is trying to introduce new 35-hour week contracts for people starting at the office without union agreement. This will mean extra work for all those on the existing 40‑hour contracts—and less pay for all new starters.

“The new contract is the first step to bringing in a part-time workforce,” Mark Dolan, the CWU’s north London rep, told Socialist Worker. “That is something we will not tolerate.

“The strike was extremely solid, despite being a very small office without a reputation for strong union organisation. That shows the strength of feeling.

“I met with workers in Edmonton this week. We talked about other ways in which we could show our opposition to the contracts, including reviving the union’s Do Your Job Properly campaign.

“This would involve workers taking all scheduled breaks, refusing to use their own cars to speed up deliveries, and not accepting bags that weigh over agreed limits.

“Everyone was enthusiastic to take more action. This small strike shows the way our members everywhere can be expected to respond if the union nationally asks them to take action over privatisation, job cuts, pensions or pay.”

New contracts are being threatened in many other places across the postal service. In some areas the local union has allowed them through, despite it being national union policy to oppose them.

Mark says that the union in north London is determined to hold the line: “There is no way we can allow this fight to be restricted to Upper Edmonton. Pretty soon it’s going to be an issue for all of north London, and then for London as a whole.

“The CWU’s London division has a policy that if Royal Mail attempts to implement its ‘savings plans’ and ‘new contracts’ in any area without our agreement, then London should respond as one. The time is coming when we must be prepared to act on that policy.”

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Second strike at Upper Edmonton

Post by baldrick »

Delivery workers in Upper Edmonton, north London, are set to strike
for the second time this Saturday. Royal Mail has brought in new
35-hour contracts, without union agreement, for people starting at
the office. This will mean extra work for all those on the existing
40-hour contracts - and less pay for new starters.

The workers held a successful strike two weeks ago.

Leading CWU union activists say that the action could soon spread.
There are disputes in every office across North London and support
for a ballot covering the whole area.

Even more significantly, the framework has been put in place to
ballot the whole of the London region if management carries out its
threat to impose change without agreement by the union.
