If all walks are supposed to be 3.5 hours by the time you add on your 20 minute break and travelling time you have already reached 4 hours! I shadowed a full time postie for 3 days then covered the walk on my own from Saturday. For the 2 days so far I have spent about an hour doing the final part of the prep and bagging up with the actual delivery taking me 4.5/5 hours. Obviously I will hope to speed up the delivery part as quickly as possible but still see that it will be necessary to claim extra hours for the indoor work that has to be done especially as I will have to put the D2Ds in the frame when I cover a walk for a full week.So far everyone has been fine and I have been told to claim o/t for all the extra hours that I do but I am wondering how long this will last. What are everyone eles's expriences/opinions?
im on 20hrs aswell and i thought its 30 mins paid break thats what it says on my contract.
im on different walks most times and i usually begin my walk at around 10:30 after bagging up, knock downs etc
10:30 start 3.5 hrs delivery makes 14:00 so i book break as O/T

20 hour contract ,they know the work will take 30 hours ,you get overtime and feel under pressure all the time ,and they save on holiday or sick pay when you are off. Not daft for them is it ,then times that by the amount of part timers

you guys are lucky you are getting a break at all !! Ever since i started last july i was told because im only contracted to do 20hrs (4hs a day), i wasnt entitled to a break what so ever!!! I asked and asked but i havent been able to have one for nearly 8 months cuz they all just said no!
I have only just recently discovered that legally i am actually entitled to this 20 min break, but the management still havent acknowledged it, so i cant have it until i get the union guy to confirm it for me next week!!

With respects to my previous problems with my trial period etc, i think things might finally be going in my favour! I had an 'informal chat' with a line manager today! I just wanted them to give me a valid reason as to why they extended it. THEY COULDNT! hehe. Im not completely clear of hassel just yet, but i was able to prove to them that it was physically impossible to do bagging up/redirections/kill offs etc + deliver mail+ travel times etc all in 4hrs.( not including this possible break time) They couldnt argue with true basic maths!!!!!!
Just waiting to see confirmation of my job description too! I was told they would look into exactly what jobs im supposed to cover!
anyway, ill keep you updated if anything more positive happens!

You can say that again. I'm on a 25 hr contract. Longs and shorts. 5hrs sat, mon and tues, 6hrs wed, thurs and fri. Can anyone make sense of that? It's impossible to work 25 hrs! SO...I put down an hours 'pressure' overtime every wed, thurs and fri, plus any genuine pressure overtime, which is most days. Of course I wasn't told this when I started, so worked for free for ages. Plus I was told 20 mins break when it's 30 . . .

A few people have said it's illegal for them not to pay for overtime worked. Well, that's only if you've written it down (ie claimed it). The new one at my DO is Hide The OT Book!Saving them a fortune.

RM should have a system where there is a fix part-time weekly contracts nationwide for postmen.

not this 20, 25, 26, 30 hours per week whatever.

most workers in general are honest when booking O/T but having said that it is open to abuse.
thats why i feel that some dom are reluctant to believe a worker doing O/T for real.

I went in to do the delivery yesterday. Once again, not finished prep, redirections not done and neither were the kills offs. I ended up doing it but mainly because I had about 30 mins to wait until I could get a lift out.

It annoys me cos there are 2 full time guys who have an hour each to prep the round which isn't that big and yesterday was very quiet so you can't tell me that 2 hours wasn't enough time to finish the prep.

Oh yes you can! If they refuse to allow you that break, then they are in breach of Employment Law. The only thing that needs to be sorted out, is what time you have your break. There's no ifs, buts, or maybes. It's the Law! No exceptions!

Quiet but strong,
now that you have recieved the information you needed and have the way forward agreement to back it up, if I was you I would be looking for the time back either in form of back pay or extra days off.
You could also tell your manager that your run is over its time if he declines your request, just check with your rep

That's interesting.... are you sure that this is written into your contract (30 mins paid break).. I am on 20 hours (as are a number of other members of staff in our delivery office) and our manager has informed us that we are not entitled to any break.

So we have a situation where 2 x 4 hour duties = 8 hours and with no breaks (RM gets 8 hours work out of us). A full time duty then covers it gets paid 8 hours but only works 7 hours 20 mins. (40 minute break)

This has been going on since our office revision last year..... do you think there is any chance of claiming some back pay?

And if RM confirm that you are entitled or your union rep confirms your entitlement then aren't you in theory entitled to some back money?
