THE children of a Wirral couple held in Venezuela on drug smuggling charges have returned home.
Paul Makin and Laura Webb, both 31, were stopped at an airport in Venezuela with cocaine allegedly hidden in their luggage.
While the couple were sent to prison to await trial, their two-year-old twins and Ms Webb’s son and daughter from a previous relationship were taken to a care home.
Yesterday Birkenhead postman Eddie Shirley, 32, told of his 5,000 journey to rescue Jack, 10, and Megan, eight, along with his former partner’s twins.
Mr Shirley also told of his anger when he confronted Paul Makin, whom he claimed had put his children at risk.
In an interview with a Sunday newspaper, Mr Shirley said: "His greed and stupidity resulted in four innocent children being dumped in an orphanage thousands of miles from home where no-one speaks English.
"What sort of man takes four children on a smuggling run in a Third World country?
"When I saw him, I wanted to do him serious harm. He was brought out with Laura. They looked terrible, still in the shorts and vest tops they'd obviously worn on holiday and were dirty and sweating.
"Laura was covered in insect bites and Paul was unshaven. He broke down in tears and blurted out that he was sorry.
"I just wanted to punch him. I told him he disgusted me and that he deserved everything he got. I could hardly bring myself to look at Laura."
Now back at their Birkenhead home, Mr Shirley is understood to be seeking a temporary care order.

And I hope he gets it.

Very commendable Eddie, those kids must have been frightened to death and thought they were abandoned, thanks to you they are now home safe and well,we take being in care for granted in this country because of high standards that are demanded, but in 3rd world countries children are left to fend for themselves. well done.
