Eastern European migrant workers are taking jobs Britons are unable or unwilling to fill, Lord Mandelson said today.

The business secretary said that workers from the eight EU accession countries – Poland, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia (the "A8") – rarely claimed benefits, helped provide public services and had made "no statistical impact" on British wages.

Mandelson told MPs on the Commons European scrutiny select committee he did not know how many workers from the eight countries were in Britain. One MP said the number coming was 500,000 a year.

Mandelson said: "I think it's important to note at the outset that the nationals coming here from the original eight new accession countries are helping to fill gaps in our labour market our British nationals are either not available to fill or are unwilling to fill.

"We have seen an expansion of vacancies in key sectors, not just hospitality and retail but in others where [they] have been unable in many cases to find British nationals to fill the vacancies that have been created.

"In many cases, too, 'A8' nationals are supporting the provision of public services.

"Very few claim benefits. The government's own research has found there has been no statistically significant impact on wages from 'A8' migration.

"There are around half a million vacancies in the UK labour market. This shows there are jobs available for British nationals despite the circulation of workers that has resulted from EU enlargement."

Mandelson added that nine out of 10 people in employment in the UK were British nationals.

"One can only conclude that there has not been an adverse effect on the employment of British nationals. On the contrary, the addition to our workforce of EU nationals has filled jobs and vacancies that would otherwise have remained very difficult to fill by British nationals, and therefore they have made a positive contribution to the UK economy as a whole."

The minister also told the committee that 47,000 British workers were posted by their British employers to the rest of Europe, compared to 37,000 workers from the EU posted by their firms to work in Britain.

That made Britain the country with the fifth highest number (in the EU) of so-called posted workers sent abroad to the rest of Europe, he added.

I remember a celebrity getting into trouble for non pc remarks about East European Immigrants filling jobs that the British Nationals didn't want like prostitution .
Mandy is parroting off the Party Line for the one eyed Idiot to keep a lid on things , he knows full well , the CBI like Europe when it suits them , particularly when they can get Foreign staff in cheaper to undercut British Nationals .

however what is interesting will be when these non nationals decide that they are over qualified and can do better than these jobs that the Nationals don't want AND don't wanted to be treated like sh** .

For example you'd get all this right wing reactionary bile in the media about Gate Gourmet , in actuality it wasn't the Fred Kite or Wolfie Smith stereotypes kicking off , it was feisty Asian Women , and that is by no means the only example .

I have a idea how the tax payers could save lots of money and be fair and EU as well.

Replace our Politicians most if not al of them,with Eastern European Politcians,get rid of accomidation and payments for politcians as well as cutting salary with no perks or director ships at all.

As for corruption ,I not beleive they would be any worse than exsisting Politicians.

Like many uk people ,I have a mortgage ,council Tax to pay school dinners,and a car to run wich is all legal.If lived in a rented room for £70 a week all in,ran a car with out tax etc,
I could afford to take a job on minimum wage.Also the social cost on these EU citizens ,crime and extra health costs and Educations costs,and If have kids they get childrens tax credits !

The reason the Brits aren't filling these jobs is they want a fair wage, the immigrants dont realise they are selling themselves short for the pittance they take the job for, in my mates work the introductory rate for East Europeans is about 1-2 pounds less than the British rate meaning the Poles etc are scooping up the jobs left right and centre, :mfo

this is a situation which has been conjured up from 2003-04 in many cases and it all is down to economics. if a person's outgoings are more than the take home pay, then it is not economical to work. different ares have different situations and costs. if a job that was paying minumum wage was advertised where i am, i would have to go for it simply because there are no other jobs around, so it's a case of take what you can and when you can, and it seems quite acceptable for government ministers who are consciencely aware that families have to cut back on food to make ends meet which in turn causes health problems, and those ministers say nothing.

my job center told me take part time job which involved driver/delivery part time on an if and when needed basis, approx 1 hour a day 21 miles away, and i would have to pay over three pounds or so per day to get there if a train is available to get there in the first place. and if i didn't apply for it, they will see me as being unwilling to work.

in a lot of cases as well, what these ministers don't say is, that a lot of these minimum wage vacancies do not have the hours to support. many vacancies that offer minimum wage are mainly part time, sometimes 15/16 hours. some at 20-24 hours per week. i have done minimum wage work once in 2000, because i wanted to work and never again because the workloads exceeded the wage. in other words, it was not worth the money, the trouble and was soul detroying.
