I'm like a neighbourhood watch, says postie Christine

A Halifax postwoman has been shortlisted for an unsung heroes award.
Christine Hupalo is one of 12 postal workers from Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire who have been nominated by the public.

They find out next month if they have made it through to the national finals of Royal Mail's First Class People Awards 2009.

Christine, based at the Halifax delivery office, covers the Norwood Green area as a postwoman driver on rural deliveries.

With 20 years service with Royal Mail, she has been on the Norwood Green delivery for almost 16 years.

Christine said: "I know the area and I know when things are going wrong – I'm like a neighbourhood watch.

"You get to know the customers and most of them are more like friends.

"This was a nice surprise so thank you to the people who nominated me."

Every day is totally different for Christine, who once called the police for a suspected burglary.

Another time she came to the rescue with first aid and a call for an ambulance when she found a man had had a bad fall in the kitchen and had struggled to get the door open.

The overall winner will win a £3,000 family holiday and spending money.
