Edmonton posties to strike against 35 hour contracts

Delivery workers in Upper Edmonton, north London, have voted to strike
this Saturday in response to Royal Mail's attempts to introduce new 35-hour
week contracts for people starting at their office.

The contracts are being imposed without union agreement in contravention
of national agreements.

Surely this has become the norm in many parts of the country now. Nationaly the C.W.U. reaction.............Dont say anything and it might all go away.Why is there no national agreement on this slash and burn policy??????? 35hr 30 hr 20hr for petes sake who can afford to live on these wages?????
Stand firm Edmonton do the job properly and show them that the hours cant be cut back. Run around like idiots carving the job up and your local rep hasnt a hope in hells chance of defending this. . Good luck to you all.

What's the cwu response to this? If hours are allowed to be bought down with the unions OK then what's the difference in offering 35 hour contracts to new entrants - it makes sense to me that if the work is on the decrease then the hours would be tailored to suit and over a period of time with natural wastage then the 35 hour contract would be the norm and the 40 hour contract the exception.

The way the union should combat this is to go for the jugular and say the pay negotiations this year will be pursued on the basis of a small percentage increase with a 35 hour week.

well i have an 32 hour and just live in hope that i get some ovetime to make it up not much i could do about it as it was the only duty going at that time. would like a duty with more hours but will :mfo :mfo :mfo :mfo :mfo :mfo :mfo have to stay on it for a year
