Gordon Brown's threat to sack 'disloyal'Harriet Harman

Gordon Brown has threatened to sack Harriet Harman over claims that she is plotting to succeed him as Labour leader.

The Mail on Sunday understands his anger boiled over at a private meeting in No10, with Mr Brown shouting: ‘Who the hell does that woman think she is?’

Sources say Mr Brown swore more than once during heated exchanges with aides on how to silence Miss Harman, Labour’s Deputy Leader.

At one point, he is also said to have discussed the possibility of demoting her from her Cabinet post of Commons Leader.

One MP said: ‘Gordon is sick to the back teeth of Harman. He has always found her very difficult and he has had enough of her disloyalty. If she thinks she is untouchable, she had better think again.’

According to some Labour insiders, Mr Brown is planning a limited Cabinet reshuffle
after the European Parliament elections in June.

However, he has been warned that sacking Miss Harman would be high-risk – and could even trigger a revolt.

One former Minister said: ‘When he calms down, he will know he cannot realistically kick her out of the Cabinet. That would play into her hands, with more freedom to boost her support among party members.

‘But he may find another way to clip her wings and demote her. Harriet has no eye for detail so he could burden her with a job which is completely detail-driven and let her sink.’

Miss Harman has outraged Labour colleagues and critics have accused her of a ‘stealth’ leadership campaign after she adopted Left-wing populist poses on issues such as bank bonuses and Royal Mail privatisation.

But she denies plotting, saying there is ‘not an iota of truth’ in claims that she is positioning herself for the top job.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister last night denied that he lost his temper over Ms Harman’s behaviour and insisted he had no intention of sacking her.

Labours Hypocrisy

On the Andrew Marr show this morning was the deputy leader Harriet Harman. She was talking about Sir Fred Goodwin and his pension when she said the following.

Ministers have said they would be prepared to take legal action and other unspecified measures to recover some of the money, saying the pay-out is inconsistent with the disastrous state that Sir Fred left the bank in.

Further steps

Ms Harman declined to say how the government would achieve this but made it clear it would not tolerate the award as it stands.

"The prime minister has said that it is not acceptable and therefore it will not be accepted," she added.

"And it might be enforceable in a court of law, this contract, but it is not enforceable in the court of public opinion and that is where the government steps in."

If that is how they feel about a legally binding contract then they should be listening to the workers of RM, the unions of the UK, the labour parties MP's who stick by what the party says and most of all the general public. Over 80% in polls asking about RM the answer is a resounding NO to part privatisation.
Listen to the court of public opinion Brown and do as the people want.
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Sir Fred Goodwin may be a greedy incompetent, but the reason they cant stop the payout is because Lord Myners signed off on the deal without checking the small print. That's the problem with appointing unelected officials to top jobs, when it goes wrong they're unaccountable.
And who appointed Lords Myners and Mandelson ? The biggest unelected official of them all.
Just spilt stain-remover down my shirt. Now how do I get that out?
