A POSTMAN has been suspended on suspicion of delaying the delivery of mail after people in Spondon reported missing letters.
Royal Mail has now launched an investigation after post was discovered at the home of one its employees.
The missing letters are now being delivered to the right destinations but residents fear that personal information, such as bank details, could have fallen into the wrong hands.
Tony Keeling, of Dale Road, said that in the past two months, he had not received two sets of bank statements, a bank card, a shopping bill, a phone sim card, coach tickets to a Derby County away match, and a birthday card with a cheque inside.
The 46-year-old said: "It was getting worrying. The bank statements have got everything on them and we didn't know where they were going to."
Mr Keeling's neighbours had also reported problems, including receiving mail addressed to another property.
Diane Fletcher, of Dale Road, said: "We've had quite a few problems. The other day we had a £1,000 cheque come through when it was meant to be delivered to Dale Road in Normanton.
"There were days when we had no post at all and other days we'd get half a dozen letters."
Childminder Sally Thompson, 43, said that she was still waiting for her Ofsted documents to come through.
She said: "I've still been able to work but it gives the impression that I haven't bothered to reply to things.
"My son's 10th birthday was January 19 and we're still waiting for two cards to come through that have cash in them."
A Royal Mail spokesman confirmed the missing mail had been recovered and that an employee from Derby delivery office had been suspended on suspicion of the "intentional delay of a quantity of mail".
He said: "We apologise to any customer in the Spondon area of Derby whose mail has been affected by this incident.
"Mail recovered during an investigation, carried out by the Royal Mail security team, is currently being collated and prepared for delivery. The delayed mail will be delivered to customers with a covering letter, explaining the delay and who to contact should they require further information."
It is not the first time mail has gone missing in the city.
In November, Royal Mail suspended an employee for failing to deliver letters dating back to 2003 in the DE24 area.
And in April, a postal worker was sacked and another person suspended after more than 4,000 letters and packages went missing in the Hilton and Codnor area.
The spokesman added: "Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women."
Anyone worried about missing post should contact Royal Mail customer services on 0845 774 0740.

Re: Postman is suspended as missing mail is discovered
There are two types of posties who do this, 1. Those looking for a quick few pounds (more if they're professional thieves) and 2. Those who can't cope with the delivery and take to not delivering it which builds up over time (most of us here usually have about 1000 items per day so even 1/4 of that per day could add up to over 1000 items per week not delivered which soon builds up).custard wrote:do these posties think nobody will notice?
