In terms of waht else do we spend the money on, what needs to be clarified is can money from the political fund be spent on non political stuff? General fund money can niot be spent on political stuff so i wonder if the same applies in reverse?

I think the CWU needs a big debate around the whole concept of affilation which in effect is blanket support rather than targeted support.

I couldn't agree more. Instead of affiliating to a particular Party. We should have a Political Fund, to use for targetted Political ends. Whether it be arranging and advertising campaigns, rallies, keeping the Public informed of THE FACTS, etc..

I heard a rumour that all the big unions were threatening to withdraw the funding to the Labour Party. If that happens watch the law change to make it all parties are to be sponsored by the state with no outside funding. They always look after themselves. They don't have a pension problem or have to make savings before they get a pay rise.

Conference further agrees that if the Government fails to agree to the full terms of this motion by March 2009, then the CWU membership will be balloted on whether they believe the Union should fund the Labour Party at the next General Election.

The NEC is instructed accordingly


So its clear to see the government havent agreed to the full terms of the motion by March 2009, so I assume and hope that the NEC at its March meeting will act as instructed by Conference 2008.

It's interesting to a political/union geek like myself to compare and contrast the experiences in different countries,the USA union confederation the AFL-CIO who are,angling for a critical Senate swing vote to pass the "card check" bill that would make it easier to form unions,union leaders have promised Sen. Arlen Specter that they will switch union members from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party to help him win a tough 2010 primary election,Now I know that we dont have primary elections over here (wish we did),but thats a huge leap for a union to take,perhaps thats a indication of how we should proceed in the future,supporting those who support us,on an issue by issue basis,and when election times come round putting our money where our mouth is.
