Postal union CWU set for vote to sever links with Labour

There was a motion pu to National Conference a few years ago by Derek Durkin who was the Branch Sec. of the Edinburgh Branch at the time. The motion was for local branches to ballot their own members as to where any political fund should go. At the time that all this was happening was when the SSP were riding high on Scottish politics and the move was on to put the funds into the backing of that party....until it all started to fall apart for them. Obviously the motion at conference was lost but it is certainly worth revisiting especially as Sotland, Ireland and Wales do to a certain extent have different political views and options to England, SNP, PLAID CYMRU, SEIN FEINN etc.

This way the political fund could be used on a more democratic basis and also would be used for more local politics and people would maybe then feel that their political levy is going towards a party and a Government that is not so far out of reach.

Just one flaw I'm afraid - the leadership wouldn't be able to dine at the "top" table anymore and their "influence" would be minimal - yeah right.

In terms of waht else do we spend the money on, what needs to be clarified is can money from the political fund be spent on non political stuff? General fund money can niot be spent on political stuff so i wonder if the same applies in reverse?

I think the CWU needs a big debate around the whole concept of affilation which in effect is blanket support rather than targeted support.

Why do we need to do anything with the money at present? It goes into the "political fund", NOT given to the Labour Party and then we decide if we need to affiliate to whom we affiliate and if we need to declassify the collection of the political fund as such and use it as a general fund. If we need a cause for the money to be spent on then we should perhaps call it the "Education Fund" and use it to send people to University and college to study negotiation techniques in business - anything other than political awareness which has brought us to the parlous state we find ourselves in.

There is a need too stop party funding and indeed donation's from all not just the overseas it has now become apparent that democracy can not go any further without radical change THE END OF THE PARTY SYSTEM Well those who thought the royalmail was outdated and archaic have not looked at the fundamental problem of our nation our democracy has been decaying before our eyes!. For with party's only those who are invited can be allowed to have their say if you are not invited you don't get too have a say!. And what's with all this whip business i thought corporal punishment was abolished or though i will make exceptions :mfo a three line whip would not be too lenient for him!. It is time we all demanded higher standards of democracy from our government or we should set up online-government for the people by the people after all no one uses the post to vote or to be reminded to vote do they!.

there's a few people who think that :mfo and the New Labour centre - right rump want a showdown with the CWU , think about it , their attack dogs :lfo & :cfo were spoiling for one in 2003 & 2007 , so yes you could be right there , he could prove points , a battle of two centre - right parties trying to prove they could run the country better or be tougher than each other .

All I'm saying is be careful , never seen such a detested politician since the Thatcher years . A very dangerous breed :mfo , very bitter , twisted and vindictive ; I wouldn't under - estimate him
