RM Managers giving car drivers petrol money!!

Question to the forum what is your experience of Royal Mail Managers paying car drivers set petrol payments on a weekly basis – have heard of one office which has been paying a number of drivers on a regular basis. What are the regs regarding this? I always thought RM would not pay petrol expenses!

Used to get £10 cash per week at my old office.... officially it was for bus fares, but a lot of folk used cars on delivery there.

Of course they are,if it gets the job done then it saves them a lot of grief.

ramone forget any regs regarding anything to do with the use of private cars on delivery as it's official union policy not to use them. And if you haven't already read through it view this particular thread.

i drive myself to my duty start point and thats it
saves me time when i finish as i would need to get a bus back to the DO
if i carried all the mail,paid for parking,used extra fuel plus wear & tear,business insurance,chance of break in etc then £10 isnt near it

If you were not to use your car and had to get the bus back to the office to finish your duty the manager would have to make travel allowences for this giving you a shorter deliver?

i have my kid to pick up from nursery so its not about saving time on delivery its time when i finish my duty

I certainly agree that it is to the benefit of the business for people to use their cars. I spoke to a postie (who is a part timer) who used to use his car and he said he noticed a difference to his pay of an extra £1,000 to £2,000 per year difference.
I accept there is a different mentality with full timers with regarding “getting done” and home within their time.
I read somewhere that it costs Royal Mail £2 per bag drop – so for example if a duty has 5 bag drops x £2 = £10 x 6 days = £60 per week saving – Therefore I can see why they are going to give a petrol payment of a £10. If you multiply that £50 saving by say 20 car drivers in an office over a week = £1,000 and that’s a savings figure over a year of £52,000 or 3 full time jobs. Stop using cars on delivery we are losing out on gaining full time jobs

This kind of thing is covered! If you cant end on time to pick up your kids get your rep to negotiate a different start and end time! It can and does happen as a fella in our office is in the same boat with the kid thing and starts and ends half hour early and they also know he will cut off and will never go over.

i can end on time and get to the nursery
however i would need to get the bus home(i live on the other side of the city) then get a bus back to the nursery
combined with if my boys ill etc i want to be able to get to the nursery ASAP
however once the georoute changes come in (a few weeks under EA) then i will look at my options
would you really have me finish on the street,get a bus 5+miles to the DO
then drive back home along those same 5 miles ive just got a bus?
i use my car as it suits me,my mail goes out on van just like everyone else
i dont leave earlier than anyone on the vans

Ok for you in this instance it works but what about those that come after you? what if you have an accident? Job and finish have gone. The employer and your rep will accommodate you, but RM will also take advantage of anything as well. Please PM brothermagrew who can put you in the picture of what is at risk. Good luck.

thats right,job & finish is gone
im not using my car to finish early.it gives me no 'advantage' as it sits parked while i walk and use pouch boxes
i pouch off at the end of my duty on foot
then i drive off
i have a large walk which is about to change under georoute
however ive tried other variants
eg park the car in the morning on the way to work and get a bus to work
takes too long and costs me money
using my car makes no difference to the duty.if im up to me time as i often am because of service button failures on the later starts then it gets cut n pouched

i'd be well up for a week where everyone would have to swap duties i.e. those who work closer to the office (cant drive) swapped with those who can drive/working the furthest from office. would be nice to see how it all works out

2001 - Robert Sharp postman - fatal RTA (sentenced to 7 years imprisonment)
2006 - Darren Cooper postman - RTA (disabled for life)
2008 - Keith Gunn postman - fatal RTA (Carole Paulson)

All of the above postmen where using private vehicles whilst on delivery.

Therein lies the risk of a repeat occurrence happening of any of the above. The scourge of private cars being used whilst on delivery/commencing delivery/returning from delivery completion. Death, imprisonment, disability for life.

and you think im at lesser risk when i drive the same road later in the day? as ive said if i returned to the DO then i would have to drive right back along the same road i drive in the morning
