A FORMER Ipswich postman has been charged with stealing or delaying nearly 70,000 postal packages.

Richard Appleby, of Cauldwell Hall Road, is accused of two charges relating to post which is said to have gone missing over a four-and-a-half-year period.

One of the accusations relates to the theft of 916 postal packages belonging to Royal Mail Ltd.

The allegation is that this took place between April 19, 2004, and November 7, 2008.

No value has been put on the items relating to this accusation.

The second charge laid against Appleby is that while being engaged as a postal operative he breached his duty by delaying 61,497 addressed postal packages. A further 6,874 door-to-door postal packages, commonly known as junk mail, are also said to have been delayed.

Again, no value has been attached to these items. The alleged delay is also said to have taken place between April 19, 2004, and November 7, 2008.

The total number of items involved in the two charges comes to 69,287.

Appleby is due to appear at South East Suffolk Magistrates court next week.

The 36-year-old was arrested in November last year on suspicion of theft.

Items including wedding invitations, credit card statements, solicitors' letters and even a confirmation of a place to study at Cambridge University were among those returned to people living in the Purdis Farm Lane and Bucklesham Road areas of Ipswich.

They are believed to be among those which are alleged to have been taken or left undelivered.

Appleby returned to Ipswich police station yesterday when his bail expired.

Following a three-month inquiry by Royal Mail investigators based in Harlow, Essex, he was charged shortly before midday.

Appleby is now scheduled to make his first appearance in court at a hearing before Ipswich magistrates on Wednesday, February 25.

just 1 weeks mail for my walk then, but more seriously,Im f***ing well sick to the back teeth of the light fingered twats, they bring every decent postman and postwomen into disrepute,I remember years ago,an old hand on HMS Antrim telling me about the 'real Navy',(wartime-late 50's) Anybody caught thieving from mess mates lockers etc, were subject to summary discipline, dropping a hatch on a finger, not too many folk did it again,he said if you saw an old guy missing a pinkey and found out he had served on board HM ships then you would know he was a tea leaf.Dunno how true that was,but the threat of it,would keep most folk honest I reckon
The more you know, the worse it gets.

it's how these papers operate - any little thing to push for privatization - done with BT staff , Railway and other utilities - the drip effect

Question has to be asked - Who gave them their job interviews in the first place!

All depends on the contracts being offered by the Royal Mail, if they were not so obsessed with saving money and ripping off thier employees with working hours and overtime and contracts that generally make the job impossible to do within an allotted time maybe just maybe these occurences would be few and far between. The Royal Mail should have a long hard look at themselves and how it operates as a company .
Not condoning the actions of a minority but there seems to be an underlining theme in most of these cases.

When are we going to get a proper deterrant?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I've had more than enough of these thieves getting let off lightly. It's no wonder there are so many cases like this, when there is no real deterrant, and so much temptation! WHEN ARE THE COURTS GOING TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!!!! :evil/mad :arrrghhh :evil/mad :Sick  :Sick :evil/mad

It's totally corporate , RM has the same problems / issues as everywhere else , only to extremes and handled very badly and yes the Management in the main is poor due to the culture and Senior / Middle management supervision & style .

No loyalty is given , none is expected , in my experience you'll get bent staff & management because of poor selection and recruitment , there's too much credence given to B/S , too much of a fixation with politics with or without a small p , too many chiefs and not enough Indians as you've a management system that runs for the benefit of the managers in it instead of actually running something .

Some of it is down to the Regulator , New Labour and the EEC , but there is a long chain of effect that goes right back to :lfo & :cfo .

I agree it may be a good idea to put the fear of god up people / act as a deterrent , New Labour will say there's not enough Prisons until they can build more Titan Prisons , the Prison Service governers & staff will say there's too many cuts to run the existing Prisons properly .

it's time that Ministers got out of management

They're building one of those Titan Prisons very near the old NWRDC Site (proposed site for the combined Coppras Hill and Crewe MC). I don't know how many prisoners it'll hold. But it will certainly provide a lot of new places. :hmmmm
