Re: shorter week instead of pay rise
Is it 35hours for the same pay?
We get paid 3hr 20minutes for our breaks so that is only 1hr 40min we gain
Although, whenever this was brought up on the board before I said this might happen.

Re: shorter week instead of pay rise
Five days of 40 miutes + 3 hours 20 mins.
So full timers work 36 hours 40 miutes.
So 35 hours and unpaid breaks would be a reduction of 1 hour 40 minutes.
= No pay riise for 100 minutes a week less.

They couldn't do a reduction of hours accross the board, otherwise the 25 and 32½ hour duties wouldn't be feasible any longer!

None if this board is any indication (but strangely will be hitting the group targets).BELIAL wrote:Not working now, only get by with saps coming in early and doing underpaid cheap labour OT.Himaggen wrote:They couldn't do a reduction of hours accross the board, otherwise the 25 and 32½ hour duties wouldn't be feasible any longer!

Re: shorter week instead of pay rise
The CWUs shorter working week policy is to achieve a 35 hour gross working week. The policy is that no one loses any pay so the hourly rate goes up and for part timers they achieve an pay increase as a result.
Our policy was re instated way back in 1994 when we rejected bonus schemes for delivery , processing and distrubtion at a special confernece in the winter gardens in Bournemouth.
The problem we have whilst there is a real need for a shorter working week to safeguard full time jobs as management contiue to increase part time jobs into deliveries the shorter working week is not a popular issue amongst memebers. The reason being is that are able to make time be it from starting early or using their cars or from the fact that under SDD their offices never went to 3.5 hours in the first place. Before anyone critcises me the I am not saying all offices but we all know a significant number do. Otherwise why do so many keep banging on about doing the job properly.
The other sad thing is that the CWU have only managed two reductions in the shorter working week since 1988. One from the removal from IWM which was 90 mins and the other in 2000 from the way forward of 90 mins neither resulted in a reduction of pay and our hourly rate went up and an increase in pay for part timers from the increase in the hourly rate.
This year the CWU is determinded to achieve a reduction in the working week whether that will be from the pay talks or from an overall agreement on modernaisation. Which includes our delivery blue print and a committment on full time jobs etc. This is why all Divisons , Branch`s and local offices have been told that no one agree to any savings until such time as we get a national agreement.
Royal Mail have a simpy policy they do not want any more national agreements and just want the CWU to agree to their plans to close mail centres and reduce full time jobs and merge delivery offices.
Its the responsibility off every rep and member to hold the line and not allow any revisons to go ahead. Remember the easy option is for an office to do a deal to take the pressure of them but the harder and right thing to do is to refuse to do a deal until we get a national agreement which protects us over the next 5 and 10 years. Dont betray the membership hold the line.
True blue having a 35 hour working week without paid meal reliefs does not mean a pay cut. The fact is our hourly rate would go significantly up going forward from such a move and would assist in the future from pay rises. A lot of other industries have unpaid meal reliefs including some bills under RTD. Ps we would simply have unpaid meal reliefs which are a legal entitlement anyway.

Re: shorter week instead of pay rise
I feel the CWU must inform the TUC that this is fine as long as all aspects of Govenment bodies are on the same pay structure and not just single Royal Mail out, otherwise their maybe hell to pay.
So that would be
Councils, NHS and TFL, oh and let us not forget the Banks

Re: shorter week instead of pay rise
A shorter working week, from 40 to 35 hours, would mean coming in an hour later not going home an hour earlier, which would be of little if any benefit to those of us awake early morning anyway.
