MP under fire over Royal Mail plans

A REBELLION in Westminister against plans to privatise part of Royal Mail has not been backed by local MP Russell Brown.

The Dumfries and Galloway Labour member has yet to follow more than 100 backbenchers who have signed a motion condemning plans by Lord Peter Mandelson to allow a private company to buy out part of the organisation.

That’s provoked a wave of criticism from south west SNP MSPs Mike Russell and Alasdair Morgan who have accused Mr Brown of being a “hypocrite who is failing to safeguard Scottish Royal Mail jobs”.

But the MP has hit back insisting he wants Royal Mail in public ownership.

He said: “Presumably Mike Russell and Alasdair Morgan also think First Minister Alex Salmond is a hypocrite who is failing to safeguard Scottish Royal Mail jobs given that he hasn’t signed the parliamentary motion they refer to.

“I have had talks with Business Secretary Lord Mandelson to personally discuss the proposals affecting Royal Mail. Like virtually all Labour MPs, including those who signed the parliamentary motion, I support the vast majority of what the Government is proposing to help build a thriving and prosperous Royal Mail, secure in public ownership.

“It is vital that we do all we can to secure the future of the universal postal service.”

But SNP member Mr Russell accused the Labour MP of letting down local people for a second time after he voted against saving post offices from closure last year.

He said: “Once again we find that he [Mr Brown] has ignored the cares and concerns of Royal Mail staff who have resolutely rejected Lord Mandelson’s plans for privatising Royal Mail.

“Once again he has failed to address the concerns of his constituency.”

MSP Alasdair Morgan added: “The Westminster government is determined to press ahead with the sale of about a third of the Royal Mail. Dutch company TNT are Lord Mandelson's preferred bidders.

“Yet, despite 100 Labour MPs having already signed a motion opposing the privatisation, Russell Brown has ignored the motion.”

Another blu labour poodle who it seems like the majority of blu labour mps are only interested in furthering their careers, most of the time at their constituencys exspense. The local CWU should do everything in its power to try and make sure this career politician is booted out when the elections come round

our MP brian donohoe(central ayrshire) has not signed it either. sent him a letter but no reply had the cheek to try and save a moorfield post office, as usual to little to late to make him look as though he cared.

Is Russell Brown no a pps to one of the Labour nobs (minister's) or something, and wouldn't he therefore have to resign from that position in order to sign the EDM in question? He used to be my MP but what with the last round of boundary changes he ended up being the MP for Dumfries which is the neighbouring constituency of mine.

On a more personal level I've known Russell Brown for years as we live in the same town, and at one time lived in the same street. All in he is a decent bloke (ex trade union rep & ex local councillor) from working class background. Who took the seat from the Tories a good while back.

On a different issue he tried to do all he could to save my old regiment from amalgamation with the Royal Scots. Regrettably the amalgamation went through due to (Hoon's) defence restructuring.
