TALES of heroism and service beyond the call of duty have been recognised with the naming of Wales’ top postal workers.

Among those nominated for the Royal Mail’s First Class Awards are Gwyn Owen, 64, of Llangefni, who rescued an elderly woman from a fire in her home, waited for the ambulance to arrive – and then carried on with his round.

Mr Owen is up for an award in the “hero” category, along with Darren Bodenham, 34, of Port Talbot, who rescued a woman who collapsed in the street, and Mike Mogford, 40, of Abercarn, who ran to the help of an elderly woman who had collapsed in her bedroom.

Two more awards, for “community” and “fundraising”, each have three nominees who were selected from more than 10 entries. Mark Ingram, 45, of Llanidloes, works as a Special Constable – he has apprehended two burglars and joined the hunt for a missing person.

Two more full-time postmen, Mark Edwards, 47, of Maesteg, and Gareth Roberts, 29, of Shotton, Deeside, help to run youth clubs.

Charitable posties include Pauline Eastment, 52, of St Athan, who has raised £23,000 since being diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago, and Joe Farrell, 62, of Chepstow, who has bared his legs to the elements for three years running to raise more than £10,000.

Andrew Jenkins, 33, of Narberth, braved the Cardiff Marathon and Llandisilio Santa run to raise £2,000.

The nine men and women will discover if they have won in March. The victorious three will then go on to the UK-wide competition.
