A POSTMAN has been told he could face jail after he admitted trying to steal 70 cards and letters from York residents.

Royal Mail bosses caught Peter Hurson red-handed, finding him with dozens of greetings cards for addresses not on his round.

At York Magistrates’ Court, the 40-year-old, of Wenlock Terrace off Fulford Road, York, pleaded guilty to attempted theft. He will be sentenced later this month.

Bosses at the Leeman Road sorting office became suspicious when they noticed an abnormally high number of cards going missing, and it was felt the most likely problem was in the area where Hurson worked.

Royal Mail manager Neil Weston launched an investigation, and early on August 12 last year, another manager, Michael Boyes, spotted Hurson working alone in a sorting room.

Charles Watson, for the prosecution, told the court: “The manager noticed that only one box on the sorting frame was nearly full and that was the Alness Drive round (in Woodthorpe), which the defendant was due to perform.

“He noticed it contained a large number of greetings cards and packages."

Mr Boyes then asked Hurson to go and get a coffee, and while he was away he checked the box and found it included many items not for Hurson’s delivery round.

Mr Watson said that at 7.50am on August 12, there was a fire drill in the sorting office. Once it had been evacuated, managers again checked the sorting frame and found the Alness Drive slot filled with other cards and packages.

Mr Watson said: “Mr Weston approached the defendant and identified himself and outlined the nature of his inquiries. He cautioned him and said he intended to conduct an interview.

“The defendant brought his delivery pouch and it contained 70 greeting cards and items not due for delivery by the defendant."

Sally Howard, for the defendant, said Hurson was previously of good character and had entered an early guilty plea.

District Judge Pascoe deferred sentencing so the probation service could compile a report on the case. He told Hurson that a custodial sentence was an option.

A section I once worked on fell under suspicion with exactly that sort of scam - some bloke not working on our section was sorting mail to his delivery - which was another village altogether. It was very disturbing to find out afterwards that we had been followed by the SIB for some time before the eventual culprit was discovered - not that we had anything to hide and it was probably a vindication of how we worked.

this is the sort of thing that gives rm a bad name and why would any one want to risk there job now i dont know how long he worked for rm or if his was just on day release or what but to take a chance is mad he could have made the money he stoe in a matter of weeks with some buff.lol and if he had money worrys well you cant just steal from joe blogs.and taint our good name for that matter. there was a guy in my work who done the same and he said he had a drug habbit. and as far as i know they are putting him into.sorry makeing him take some kind of rehab and he is keeping his job.now i dont know what to think of that now am all about forgive the sinner but not the sin kind of guy but is it fair you tell me.just hope that i never feel like dipping my hand into the oi mail bag to pay the bills

Sadly, i have always believed this is one avenue open to abuse-the deliberate mis-sorting of mail.for this reason.this is one check we should all welcome-both on tyhr I.P.S. and individual frames-

Hey I'm all for forgiveness and all that but come on. When the rest of us law abiding employees are constantly given such a bad name because of a few bad apples, locking them up every time is the the only deterrent.

YES ! Him and that w***stain, Brand. Doing drugs or being on the pop too much is not an excuse. Nor is having money problems.
We all have problems of one sort or another to contend with, but we dont use them as a feeble excuse to go around thieving of
off other people.
I'd say throw the book at him but he'd only try and nick that too.

point takein .but i just wonder why some rm workers get an 2nd chance as i said there was a guy in our place who got caught and if the story is true he is geting help for his drug habbit and is keeping his job so who gets to pick the keepers and the ones that take the fall any one know of an case like this.

I wouldn't have thought he got caught for theft because that's an instant dismissal in any job but he may have had a problem and asked for (and received) help from OH.

no he got caught stealin cards deffo. its the rest of the story am not sure about no one has seen him yet i.did not no him as he work a diff shift but am not sure i would want to work with him if they put him on our shift unless rm wait for his to get help then sack him for something diff

If he was caught, he should be sacked- no excuses; what message would that send out.to all of the rest of us. as a previous post said, we all have problems, and do not steal.
