Trying to escape - who do I get a job reference from?

Post by beethoven646 »

Hi,

I'm currently full-time and about 8 years into the job but I've had enough and I'm applying for other jobs. Can anyone tell me whose name I should put down for a reference on application forms? I don't want my DOM to know I'm looking to leave so I don't want to ask him about it. There are some instructions on the reverse of my payslip about references but I've no idea whether I can even to access the RM intranet and that still wouldn't give me a name to put on job application forms.

Any guidance would be very welcome! Thanks.

References are often checked last, once you have the job. I usually put 'references available upon request', and worry about it later. If they do request them, I'll give them a non work related one, and one from my previous job, then ask DOM or whoever, if I actually get the job. Employers know that most people don't want them contacting current employers.

I think it's HR that normally give the reference but a personal one would be best from your DOM.

You can normally state on your application that you'd rather they not contact such and such a person until after a job offer is made.

It's better to write your own references, chose firms that have gone under or been amalgamated with fictitious telephone numbers, you give yourself glowing reports of intelligence, understanding the business, punctuality, attendance, the willingness to go the extra mile and numerous academic qualifications - then at the end you give the mobile number of a friend who has been coached on what to say as a personal reference - they of course will be the only ones the prospective employer will be able to contact - you must be able to bullshit as well :wave

I think I'm on the 3rd circle of hell at the moment (now where is that donut :hmmmm ).

Although my manager could be on all the levels himself, at once

Officially RM dont give out references. They will give a standard ref outlining dates employed from/to and reason for leaving. That is it.

You can get this from HR Bristol Mail Centre. :)

I read a book once it was "How to assert yourself in your Marriage" - after I'd finished it I thought I'd try it out.

I said to my wife, get me a meal cooked and serve it up with a bottle of chilled wine, then run me a bath and scrub my back and buff my nails, then get in the bedroom cos we're going to make love like I want to for a change.

Then I said and guess who will be washing me and combing my hair tomorrow morning - she said "the undertaker probably"
