Privatisation is out of fashion so the Labour Government should dump foolhardy plans to sell off a slice of the Royal Mail.

The banking collapse and economic chaos has proved that the private sector and free market do not always know best.

The anger and determination of Labour MPs to scupper the Government's proposals is real. The party's 2005 General Election manifesto pledged to retain a publicly owned postal service, a promise endorsed last summer in the so-called Warwick II agreement with the trade unions.

So handing a stake in the Royal Mail to a foreign-owned, profit-hungry rival would be another political own goal by a Government that needs all the friends it can get.

Posties are popular and householders would be understandably worried about the quality of deliveries if the sale goes ahead.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has confounded many of his critics since his surprise return but he's going down the wrong road by threatening the Royal Mail.

Now Post Office bosses are halting discussions with their workers because so many details have appeared in the Daily Mirror.

Well we've got news for them too: we're going to represent our readers and that means opposing Royal Mail privatisation.
