Its the same in my office! Management sh*t all over the new ones Knowing they want a job.

Congratulations to the newbie who walked out!!!! I bet many people wish they could have done the same
after their first day. I have seen retired police ,ex-forces come in, looking for a 'wee'job to supplement their pensions--
and make a bee line for the door, after an hour or two.

Only 1 guy has left from about 10 newbies in the last 2 years.He was on a walk for about 3 months(it was vacant)but then when that walk got signed for he then went on to reserve and could not handle it.

newbies seem to be permanently on loan in our gaff so no idea if they have left or not.

i dont have a fix round and the do i work at covers over 50 different rounds.
if im given a new round to do and theres no information on what to expect i do feel let down.
a couple of time i have finished as late as 6pm that was during the first couple of weeks when i started.

One new guy in our office had to box his own road in .He took one look at the amount of mail on the frame and then said he was going to the toilet never to be seen again...brilliant...

The problem is once they see you can take the s**t, they'll never giver you a fixed round.
I started 2 years ago got 3 days training on a delivery, then did it on my own for one day. Ever since I've doing different walks every day, sometimes at different offices. Even though theres at least 4 or 5 vacant deliveries, which have a different person on everyday. Also, when your on a new delivery and your struggling to throw it in, the manager and full timers get on your back for not sorting which is really frustrating.

I'm leaving the job soon, I love the job and now don't mind being on different deliveries everyday. But after 2 years of not having a long weekend, never knowing my days off and working way beyond my hours. Not too mention booking a holiday abroad for my annual leave. Only to find the day before, my manger has scribbled it out. Same with overtime, and union reps do absolutly nothing.

Back to your original question, over the last year half of all new posties have left within the first month.

I have been at Royal Mail for about 44 months and still struggle with it due to uneven workload as full time reserve postman. One of walk I have to cover last years I have been doing it every 4 weeks or so is a nightmare for me due to high volume post and number of houses and so many flat to enter. I have complained about the walk so much manager put me on different list of walks for this year and I have not done it for last 11 weeks (Hoping it doesn't happens)

I would like my own walk but it is very hard to get one especially for full time. I could cope with the job as long it is not ridiculous workload on sorting mail.

So I have decided to cut down my hours and go for 34 hours contract with Royal Mail buying down the hours. But I have not told the local management about it as I wait for union rep to come back. This will mean 35 pounds less a week but no more IPS and finishing at more suitable time which is important for me to have more recovery time and studying time.

It must be worse for new posties with more workload. I know managers are not being fair. I mean nobody told me about claiming or booking overtime in first few weeks and I have to complain about working for so many hours for 28 hours pay. They wouldn't back pay it.

At least I am happy with a week off every 6 weeks which is a big help.

Its really tough for new starters now as they are put under a lot of pressure straight away. Three days work in a frame is no joke I was struggling to get all the flats in mine after just two Before the single delivery agreement we had a yearly re-sign (or re-pick) which meant if you did a year you got a chance to do something better like a regular walk.

As for newbies walking out we had one that run out

I was on a round delivery to the shops outside the office when i saw this young lad legging it up the road When i got back in i asked the guy who was training him where he had gone "to move his car" he replied. But he walked in and does not drive, someone shouted. He had really run away

what a great advertisment for royal mail.i bet mr leighton wont mention this when he leaves in march,think how much money has been wasted on interviews ,uniform etc.

Good luck too you "kaks" it was good when i started but now i would not do this job as a new starter as it has changed from day too night and a deep dark night at that!.

I'm a Workplace coach at my office and my main priority is to make sure all the newbies I train are kept on a duty for the agreed time-scale of 13 weeks. During that time any new entrant should not be farmed out to another D.O. or moved from one duty to another, it is the coaches role to make sure that doesn't happen. I've had a number of discussions with my managers when they have tried to mess about with the newbies, but what the coach says goes, end of story, that's the whole point of the Workplace Coach. The rules are there for the managers to look at, should they want to, but...................... you all know the rest.

No workplace coach when I started two years ago - just a different walk every week, not knowing your day off until the Friday, not being told how to claim overtime, etc.

Have to say my workplace coach was very good, quite a head-strong lady who'd been there well over 10yrs. And knew her stuff.
