I've got a 30 hour contract I come in at 6:15 and will happily work 40 hours. I was put on a beast of a delivery last week took me 5 hours plus on delivery alone.
I told my manager I will work 40 hours and then cut off. But he's saying because I'm working over my contracted hours I can't cut off. I would go to the union rep, but his heads so far up my doms arse he'll never hear me. So i ended up cutting off after 6 hours everyday, leaving over half the delivery for him to deliver. He wants to speak to me about my performance though.

Lies lies and more lies. (from your lino/DOM/DUM)
It is ILLEGAL to FORCE anyone to do overtime. Yes, you CAN work to your time.
It is usual for managers to then blame performance, call you slow, rubbish, not up to the task when you start working to your time. It's bullying and harrasement but when has that stopped them? They have even been known to refuse you O/T or place you on the worse walk in the office as a punishment. It's just the tools they use. It's something you need to be aware of when you show you will not be treated like an idiot.
Work to your time and smile at any attempts to change your mind but be aware of the dangers.
RE: Union rep, if you are not happy contact your area rep instead.

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

Yes you can cut off, tell your manager before you go out that you are going to cut off
its up to him/her to find someone to take the rest or streamline your job.
As for your union rep like as already been said go above him if he is not sticking up for you.

Appendix 3 of the conduct code, 3.1 commencement of delivery.......quote him that (most probs he wont know what it is)
I have an e-mail from Allan Leighton, when I sent him e-mail about pressure overtime is voluntary and not compulsory....he strongly agreed with me.
If anyone wants a copy of this e-mail private message me.

Re: Can I cut off, if?
I really think that the booking of excess should be banned by the union. Royal Mail are making deliveries too large to finish so that on easy days you work to your time and on every other day you are 'pressured' to complete the job on excess. If excess really was voluntary in our office, every day 50% of deliveries would not be completed.
I have enough of a time explaining to my childminder when my day off is, let alone what time I finish on which day and could I be a bit late if Royal Mail cocked up the day before and it will be busy. Do I see RM paying £2 per half hour for childminding and £5 per 15mins for 'excess' childminding? NO.
By all means do overtime at the going rate (X hours per half delivery) but DON'T CLAIM EXCESS. It's just RM labour on the cheap and it makes it hard for the rest of us.
