REDBRIDGE: Residents slam Royal Mail for post distruption

HUNDREDS of households went without receiving mail for three days last week after postal workers stopped delivering during the snowy weather.

Thousands of letters and parcels - many containing important medical and financial information - were left in piles at the Royal Mail sorting office in Johnston Road, Woodford Green after the firm deemed the streets to icy for its staff to use safely.

Terry Dent of nearby Danbury Way, criticised the company for failing to give residents any explanation for the lack of deliveries.

He said: “I rang the sorting office in Johnston Road several times, but it just rang and rang.

“There are lots of elderly people around here who may have been waiting for important medical information - and lots of other people may have had other notifications such as fines which are now late because of this.”

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "Collection and deliveries have been subject to disruption as a result of the adverse weather conditions and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience, however, regular updates on the disruption to services have been, and continue to be, carried on both our website and on our customer services helpline. "Staff at the local delivery office have also been working incredibly hard to answer customer queries and ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. The majority of deliveries were made in the Woodford Green area yesterday and all deliveries are going out today."

We didn't deliver anywhere today, I've got 4 days mail for some parts of my rural delivery. When I've got to see people and the shop, I've told them that anyone with ID can come and pick their mail up from the office, I mean on a rural there are shedloads of 4x4's, use them as they we made, instead of relying on me in my front wheel drive van!

Precisely. On many rural deliveries the only vehicles you see are 4X4s which are essential on such rough pot-holed tracks - but Royal Mail only provides standard vans designed for urban areas so it's no surprise when they fall apart after a couple of years and get stuck in the snow.

We are on our 3rd day of not delivering any post, I did get out with a couple of roads today what a mistake that was it took 1 & 1/2 hrs to do about 120 houses it was terrible conditions in Bristol & now it's all turning to solid ice, I don't think I will chance it tomorrow, if I can even get to work ,I don't think it's worth the risk the ICE will be worst than the snow, what makes me mad is ,if true RM are saying go out at your own risk I don't think we are insured in these conditions, so that means if your off sick will you get paid if you get injured or even worst will you get a stage anyone know.

There is one good point made in that article though: There should have been a recorded message, explaining the situation. FFS, it isn't hard to record a message on an Answering Machine. If they didn't have one already, surely they could have got some for the purpose. Many elderly people, don't even have a COMPUTER, let alone, Internet access. It's just common curtesy, to provide informaton on the delay.

But the rest was rediculous! Why expect posties to risk their safety, when there are so many people failing to turn up to work, because of the snow?
They're just being completely unreasonable.

Where i work in London snow is a rareity, but in 25 years of delivery this week was the first time we have failed to go out and deliver. H+S is of course more prominent now and the snow was the worst ive seen, but imo the main problem is the walks are just too long now to even contemplate it.

One failure because of snow,well apart from this week,a 31yr man told me this week.
