Union bosses yesterday accused Royal Mail of trying to bulldoze through jobs cuts despite making huge profits.

They say Royal Mail is intending to cut up to 16,000 jobs – one in 10 of its workforce – to reduce costs by 10 per cent.

Dave Ward, deputy leader of the Communication Workers Union, said: “We are not opposed to modernisation but these are random savings which have not been properly worked out.

“They have nothing to do with modernisation, they are panic measures which will hit the quality of service.”

Royal Mail, which is writing to staff with details of redundancy offers, is said to be seeking to reduce its wage bill by £470million a year. The plan, part of which is code-named Project Tiger, comes after the company made £93million profit in the nine months to Christmas.

Chief executive Adam Crozier, who earns £3million a year, last month boasted all parts of the group were making money for the first time in 20 years. Internal Royal Mail documents reveal the extent of proposed savings.

One reads: “All teams have been given a 10 per cent cash reduction target and so we need to focus not only on where we can deliver an excellent service with fewer roles but also opportunities to spend less cash.” Another says: “All costs are being reviewed including staff, vehicle and administration costs.”

Royal Mail is writing to staff offering three options – voluntary redundancy, part-time work or switching to another office.

Information packs include a ready reckoner so they can work out how much money they would get if they take redundancy. The minimum is six-months’ money. A 57-year-old with 20 years’ service would get two years’ pay.

Those opting for part-time jobs would have their hours cut from 40 a week to fewer than 25.

Mr Ward accused bosses of jumping the gun by writing to staff a week before a scheduled meeting with the union to discuss ways to save money.

Royal Mail has shed 50,000 jobs since 2002. It currently employs 160,000.

The company insists job losses are inevitable as it is delivering five million fewer items a day than two years ago.

Royal Mail refused to discuss the likely number of redundancies.

It's just stamped letters but an increase in flats and packets more than makes up for that.

How much do you get if you take reduced hours?

Dunno about that, I think it will go down in order, over 55s if not enough applies, then it goes down to the next age bracket and seniority and so on, I think it becomes VR not EVR.
