A POSTMAN sacked after his van was stolen has been given his job back.

Brian Johnston's six-month nightmare began last July when he was making his rounds in the village of Crawshawbooth, Rossendale.

He parked outside a house and left the keys in the ignition while he posted a letter.

A man and a woman leapt into the van and drove off.

It was later found on its roof in a nearby field.

Mr Johnson was suspended and later sacked by Royal Mail .

Now he has finally been reinstated after an independent appeal tribunal

Mr Johnston, 32, of Crofters Bank, Loveclough, said: `It is an immense relief.

"It has been a really tough few months.

"I have been doing a little bit of work here and there, but not much and it has been very difficult."

Mr Johnston, who is married and has a one-year-old son, said: "I just want to put it behind me now and get on with my life.

"People really need to think about their actions. This nearly cost me my livelihood."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: `We do not discuss individual personnel issues.

"We have a robust disciplinary process, which is agreed with the union and which is subject to appeal."

Last September Christopher France, then 24, of Burnley Road, Crawshawbooth, admitted aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified, drink-driving, driving without insurance and delaying postal services at Burnley magistrates court.

He was given a 12-month community order with supervision and a four-month curfew.

He was also banned from driving for three years and ordered to take the drink-impaired drivers' programme and to pay £65 costs.

Janine Brooks, of Hardman Avenue, Rawtenstall, admitted allowing herself to be carried in a vehicle taken without the owner's consent and with opening a postal package while in transit when she appeared before Rossendale magistrates last August.

Brooks , then 18, was given a one-month curfew order and ordered to pay £50 costs.

I think he got it back only because RM cocked up their disciplinary procedure somewhere, thats how many do get off, it happens, if it is watertight, then you have no chance.

Bit like Mr Loophole, the Traffic lawyer, he get his clients off on technicalities and Police own failure to follow procedure, it happens time and time agian.

and RM have probably laid it on too thick as everything is purely to impress & to a foregone conclusion - naturally the Paperwork would be curious , vague , absurd sometimes , contradictory , begging more questions than it answers - As NWpostie says , RM's case has to be watertight with an immaculate paperwork trail , the union quell surprise have found holes and done their job .

Also RM know that it wouldn't stand up in a IT .

the bit about being agreed with the Union is laughable , RM do not go along with the spirit of the agreement , goalposts are moved and perverse interpretations are put on things by Senior & Area Management .

bit rough round there - Banjo country :Very Happy

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

RM's case has to be watertight with an immaculate paperwork trail....

Brother norbert can you kindly remind me and the forum on how the RM case collapsed with reference to the Multi Cultural Room and an employee being stitched up but winning hands down at Tribunal. I think you know the one that I am referring to.

described as " far fetched surrealist fiction " - five paragraphs down - apparently that guy used one of the top barristers in the country , the Paganist donated his services for free , RM's arrogance backfired there
http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/011392.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Google Holden V Royal Mail Group PLC , it's a long but very well written article - RM's case was too obscure , perverse and vague , the article said the Tribunal Panel listened with increduality ; especially with the bit about getting the IB to put a CCTV camera in that room .

The kindest thing you can say is there must have been a lot of pressure , a culture of fear due to the dicktats from on high issued after the Jermaine Lee case , and there would be brownie points for trying to break Donald's arse .

The Tory papers gave RM a pasting so there was some rough justice.

And Brian will have learnt never again to leave keys in an unattended van.

Just pisses me off when some posties get their jobs back after leaving keys in the ignition and others dont. It shouldn't matter about technicalities. How incompetant is Royal Mail? All we hear of is people being sacked and reinstated...this needs to be looked into. An absolute disgrace on RMs part and is a reflection on the utter incompetance of management...

Can you really blame Lord Mandelson for wanting to bring in new management?

Yeah but at the end of the day , it was New Labour with their idea of mangeralisim bringing these people in from the private sector and their style of management , and the " one eyed Scottish idiot's & the grinning wonder's " "public sector reforms " that haven't worked very well - so Mandy has to try and save face .

If RM has botched things and they will do with a culture of fear , doubt and uncertainity & pressure + a regimented style which doesn't give many opportunities to impress , the Union in some cases are doing their jobs ; which is to find things that are wrong .
