Drunk David Callan drove so slowly along Herne Bay High Street that a sprinting policeman was able to grab his keys from the ignition.
The officers had seen him stagger across Bank Street and get into his green Micra Car.
Canterbury Magistrates Court heard how the officers saw the car slowly weaving down the High Street.
They got behind it but he wouldn't stop.
Julie Farbrace, prosecuting, said:"The car was travelling so slowly they were able to wrench the key from the ignition. They asked Mr Callan if he had been drinking.
"He replied: “Yes, I'm pissed."
Road side readings showed he was over two and a half times the legal limit.
John Patty, defending, said his client hit the bottle because his ten year marriage had broken up.
He said instead of walking the mile to his home in Holmscroft Road the postman drove because he didn't want to be late starting his rounds.
Callan,42, was given 80 hours unpaid work, banned for two years and ordered to pay £60 costs.

Too right! I can understand him hitting the bottle, under those circumstances. But it doesn't excuse him driving in that state!
