neglecting your duty??

New to the board and need some advice people, went in on my day off to cover my duty on overtime 2day. Ater doing my work for 3 hours was informed by my line manager that our group who cover a walk on phase 3 ( joke) were having to do so again today although we were the last batch to do so on Saturday and it should have been another groups turn as this is meant to be done " FAIRLY". To cut a long story short put my coat on and headed home saying that it was not being done fairly and therefore I was not doing the overtime which is voluntary not scheduled. Have I landed myself in the doo-doo???

if you are out on ot,voluntarily,on your day of relax,you have a contractual obligation to fulfill that over the course of the week,anything above is classed as voluntary not compulsory,the fact you took exception to go home,after changes to your o/t shift were applied does not matter,the job is stressful enough without changes being applied on your dayoff,the point is would you have come out on your day off if you knew you would have been expected to do more work than had been previously agreed,if the answer is no,then you should have been told in advance,24 hours notice ,and at that point you would have told the management you will be staying at home on your due day off,that would have been that,now because they tried to implement a change without due notification you are at home,losing money,they have a duty to cover a vacant shift,the grievance procedure is your option.

once again...managers should give u as much notice as possible,getting told on the day is not what the agreement is about,but hey hoh that's how my managers don't recognise me now

Simple answer.

Don`t work your days off.

let the managers sort out their own mess.

no offence, but info like this, is not helping the lad, but i do agree with you to some extent.

Managers may argue that you had agreed to come in and do your del, and that the lappsing is part of your duty.
after all if you come in to work your day off and its pi**ing down i dont think you can pull your coat on and fu*k off home
saying i dont fancy it in that rain!!! or maybe you can..

It's overtime f**k em, IMHO worst case scenario you get an hourage penalty, and i'd bloody agrue against that.

But TBH managers prey on people to do overtime so sod em enjoy your time off.

Can`t wait till they bring in the new proposed *4 hr* overtime shifts were the mugs still working have to prep the work and the mug coming in on overtime only does the delivery

As for neglecting your duty I think there is something they can hit you with for walking off, but can`t remember the terminology thats used to describe it.

You may be thinking of "Abandonment of duty"

i have experianced this loads of time where people go off whislt on o/t nothing was ever pursued by management or ever came of it.

Overtime is always voluntary as long as I have known it, I have abandoned O/T halfway when I have discovered I was getting screwed over or I find that a Postie has got to the frame and is attempting to leave more for me than he should. I always check who I am working with before I start sorting as I know some people by their reputations and would not work with somebody who will screw me over, I would abondon it there and then, walk off, never been pulled up over it.

these days now I never share a walk with anybody, the only person you can rely on is yourself.
