Several delivery offices in Oxford are preparing for possible industrial action in protest at attempts by Royal Mail to impose changes to working practices without negotiation with the union. This is a clear breach of national and local agreements.

Across Oxford the forcing through of un-agreed change has come with an increase in bullying and the use of disciplinary procedures.

The company is also introducing the infamous four miles per hour jogging posties. Using the Pegasus computer-led system to “revise” the length of our rounds, it plans to make us deliver more in less time.

In Royal Mail House delivery office this has already been imposed and has created chaos. East Oxford delivery office has now received notification that its revision will be imposed in February.

In some offices management have decided to reinterpret the national pay and modernisation agreement to suit their agenda. In Abingdon, our members have found that the usual process for the selection of holidays has arbitrarily been replaced by allocation by the management.

Royal Mail in Oxford is confident and determined. It is declaring how it intend to proceed both locally and nationally. It would seem that Royal Mail is prepared to take on and marginalise the CWU. The question is, is the CWU up to the task of defending both its members and itself?
