Protest group to fight Pewsey sorting office closure

A protest group called STAMPS, Stop Taking Away My Postal Services, has been set up in Pewsey to lobby against the possibility that the village's Royal Mail sorting office could close.

It is organising a protest outside the sorting office behind the village's Post Office at 10.30am on Tuesday January 27.

Petitions have gone up in local pubs, at the Waterfront bar on Pewsey Wharf, in the PACT Centre and at Cossor's Carnival Shop.

STAMPS co-ordinator Tony Bolton said: "We are worried for the people who have their mail delivered to the sorting office and for the people who would have to travel to Marlborough to collect parcels and missed deliveries of recorded mail etc.

"The cost by bus I have been told is £6.40 return and for those hard-up it will possibly be more than they can afford.

"This must be stopped especially as it will cost more to deliver post in this manner with extra wages and extra fuel."

Royal Mail has confirmed that the future of the sorting office is under review.
