A post office branch manager who acted as a drug courier has been jailed for two years.

Shazaid Umer Ali, 27, of Hunter Grove, Bathgate, was caught with a haul of ecstasy and cocaine worth £55,000 on the A74(M) motorway near Eaglesfield.

At Dumfries Sheriff Court, he admitted possessing the drugs with intent to supply.

The court was told that Ali was suffering family problems at the time of the offence in January last year.

The drugs were discovered by police carrying out routine checks on the motorway through Dumfries and Galloway.

Det Insp Colin McColm said at the time of the arrest that it showed people carrying drugs through the area had a "high chance" of being caught.

The court heard Ali knew that the package he was delivering was suspect but was not aware it contained drugs.

Was he using the Post Office to collect/deliver the drugs. Or perhaps, storing them on the premises?
If not. What possible relevance is there in saying that he works for the Post Office?

As for the claim that his "Family problems" are a mitigating factor. Unless he was being blackmailed, with threats against his Family. Any personal problems he was having, are IRRELEVANT!!!!!

I'm sick of hearing about people getting let off lightly, because they have a good sob story! Where's the deterrant?
I'm not the vindictive type. But I strongly believe, that if there were serious consequences facing these people. They would be less likley to be tempted.

Bear in mind, that with good behaviour, he can be out in less than a year!

Biggest problem in the justice system is that apart from a murder conviction where the mandatory sentence is life, they are always given a maximum sentence but no minimum. I think a minimum sentence should be awarded at the same time just like they do in some states in America.

For example. Shoplifting Maximum sentence 10 years - minimum sentence 5 years - take the prisoner away. Then that prisoner can only become eligible for parole not 1/2 way through their sentence but only when they have completed the minimum part. At the moment they get parole at exactly the 1/2 way point but don't have to do anything to earn it. I also think it would make sentencing more transparent.

It worries me what kind of sh*t :cfo & :lfo were or are on in the name of a quick buck and they will say i don't give a f*ck!. Typical of two money junkies as they are and always will be where will they get their next fix :lfo & :cfo!. I have heard pfizer are looking for one small cock to turn into a big dick :cfo & :lfo and don't think i an being hardon them for they have had it coming for far too long!. Please don't start making accusations like that. I know he's far from popular, and many people have criticised him on here. But accusing him of being a Gangster, is a bit extreme isn't it?

I didn't mean to imply that you were lying. What I meant was, that (as far as I know) he hasn't been proven to be a Gangster or a Crook. It's just those terms that I was asking you to be careful of, as it's just an opinion, rather than a fact.

Pocky, We understand what you mean, but you have to be careful not to libel anyone when you're on a forum.
If the person concerned decides to act on it, it wont be you he'll go after, it will be the forum that allowed you ( or anyone else) to publish the libel. In this case. Postman, as the owner could be heavily fined and the entire forum shut down.
And it's a mistake to think that a person cant be prosecuted for libel if what he says is true, they can.
