Almost 700 jobs are set to be axed by a UK parcel carrier following a decision to restructure its delivery network, unions say.
The Usdaw and Unite unions said they were "devastated" by the announcement from Home Delivery Network Ltd that 686 jobs could be lost.
The unions said they were working with HDNL to minimise compulsory redundancies.
Irene Radigan of Usdaw said: "The home shopping sector has seen a steady decline over the last few years and these redundancies are not a direct result of the economic downturn."
"Our aim is to ensure that those people who are made redundant leave the business with the best chance of securing future employment and that HDNL is able to offer job security to all union members who remain with the company."
Julia Long of Unite added: "The decision to close eight sites will have a devastating affect on our members and their families, and we will be doing all we can within the consultation process to save as many jobs as we can."
The consultation process begins next week, with unions vowing to scrutinise the business case for the closures.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Parcel Firm 'Set To Cut 700 Jobs'
They won't be the only ones, Parcelnet another company that do home deliveries for Next, Cotton Traders, bodens, Lakeland etc aren;t going to renew thier contracts. More people will be on the dole. However this would be an excellent chance for Royal Mail to get the contracts !! Also perhaps tells you there isn't enough money in the market for all the current players.
" Parcelnet has taken the decision not to retender for the fulfillment work it currently handles on behalf of several high street and home shopping retailers. The company will continue to provide home delivery services to those businesses affected, but phase out fulfillment activities as current contracts expire.
Carole Woodhead, Managing Director at Parcelnet, said: "Parcelnet's longer-term vision is to concentrate investment and expansion activities on its highly-successful distribution business where we see significant opportunities. These measures are designed to secure our future success particularly during these difficult economic times."

A lot of contracts will come back to Royal Mail/Parcel Force for the sheer reliability of the service and thats why its so important the USO is maintained.

Busy, if only that were true in my D.O
IPS mail is trailing off just over a week now, hopefully its just a tempoary lull or ther mail centre getting more effecient at getting mail through the machines for walk sorting, although if they got time to do more walk sorting does that mean they are low on outward mail? Investigation will be needed if the IPS mail dosent pick up soon.
