Malmesbury's mystery of the abandoned Post Office trolleys

Five years after first complaining about an unsightly Royal Mail cart chained outside his home Tony Marriott has finally had it removed.

Postmen use the high capacity trolleys to dump letters and parcels too big for their bag, returning later to make the delivery.

But the grubby looking cart was only designed to be a temporary measure – yet it remained for five years.

Mr Marriott, of Lacemakers Road in Malmesbury, has been writing letters of complaint to the Royal Mail for years.

He said: “It wasn’t quite on my drive but it was only a few feet from my house.

“We used to get lots of sarcastic comments from visitors who called it ‘the supermarket trolley’.

“One friend even offered to go down there with some bolt croppers and remove it for me.

“But I knew that after all my complaining they would point the finger at me.”

He said the cart appeared when the postal deliveries were cut from two a day to one.

He said: “When they did two deliveries they didn’t need it because everything would fit in their bags.

“I had dropped it for a while because my wife didn’t want us to cause a fuss.

“But over Christmas we had visitors who commented on it and I decided I would try again to get it moved.”

More than four years ago Mr Marriott was assured the matter would be dealt with.

Now thanks to new Malmesbury delivery office manager, Sarah Bamber, the Royal Mail has finally removed the offending cart.

A second trolley on John Betjeman Close is still to be taken away.

Royal Mail press officer, Mike Dalton, said: “This has gone on far far too long and we must apologise to Mr Marriott.”

what the hell are they doing using trolleys as pouch boxes

Every body is doing it,there must be 6 or 7 down my way chained up,we have no choice,no pouch boxes!

They aren't secure and should only be left for a specific period of time (depending on location), a few questions should be asked about Mail Integrity.

(Weve got about 60 )Why dont your vans bring the work out?Do they not have the scope?Could you not ask for a bag drop duty with missorts or part of a delivery on it?I know this will cost hours but as disgruntledpostie1 said they should not be left alone for to long as they are not secure,has your local rep not put a proposal to sort this out?Ive never heard of this sort of thing before,this is wrong and should not be happening.

It most certainly would noy be residing anywhere near my house i'd have removed it yonks ago , probably dumped it in some council tip cheeky bars**rds just why do these managers think they can get away with this sort of behaviour the mind boggles anyway these troleys are due to be brought back to the office daily not left on the streets of any surburban area report it to the councils environmental department !!!
