THREE striking postal workers in Woolavington returned to work today with heavyweight political backing for their cause.

Dave Chapple, Janet Cox and Nick Lock staged a weeklong walkout in protest at Royal Mail's decision to close their tiny wooden sorting office without looking into finding an alternative site in the village.

Bristol and district Communication Workers Union secretary Dave Wilshire said the action had been a success thanks to high profile media coverage and support from Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainger and former cabinet minister Tony Benn.

He said: “We have had support from both ends of the political spectrum as well as the support of everyone in the village to keep the office open.

“This can only help us convince Royal Mail to keep the facility in the village and I am optimistic they will make the right decision.

“They have told us they are looking at another potential site although nothing has been confirmed, but the workers are in high spirits.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “It was extremely disappointing that staff at Woolavington chose to take action, but contingency plans meant that we were able to maintain deliveries in the area.

“No final decision has been reached yet on the future location of the unit.”
