Seen anybody sacked for it yet? Its a case of reading between the lines here. There would be an absolute zero tolerance, like they have for thieving, if it were so taboo. If you followed every rule there was so precisely, most people would probably get halfway round their duties and their time would be up. Its a case of doing your job properly and using your common sense in the real world. Leaving your passenger door open at a junction would be a no no for me anyhow.

Probably because there has been a theft in the area from the front of a vehicle. I know that checks are done, but they have obviously caught people with mail in the front who weren't in attendance. I know many people who have been caught carrying in the front and not in attendance and were just given a warning. The answer is work from the back but if you are in attendance, then there can't be a problem, you are with the mail.
I know that by the letter of the law, they can conduct you for just carrying mail in the front with you sat there, but how many have been conducted for this?

answer = 3.
They got off because a manager from another office in the same area was delivering a cut-off in own car with a full blue tray of mail on passenger seat.

Simple answer is when in doubt.....don't.........! Anyone knows (or should do) when they are tested on a round that they work from the back of the van, difficult to work from front as you have some ! sitting in seat, so if anyone insists that there is no time to work from the back have a word and get the duty tested, properly, seat belts on not checking mail till you get to the door etc. etc. etc. and if it takes much longer whoopee! you have saved some precious hours that keep getting stolen from us!!
Do the job properly or soon there won't be a job worth having!!

I have never heard of anyone being conducted for having mail sat at the side of them in the front? If they are doing people for this, then everyone should work from the back all the time.

Staff have had WTL session this morning about all mail in back of van and not on passenger seat, not even a bundle for immediate delivery.....I WAS RIGHT !!!!
Also no trolleys to be used as mobile pouch box and left tied to a lamp post unattended for hours.......They can only be left unattended for 10mins max.
CWU wanting to do the job properly within RM guidelines
RM managers dont wanna use RM guidelines because the job takes longer, means more O/T or cut-offs.
You have had years of posties using their good will to get the job done in the time allotted.......i.e. coming in early, no meal breaks, not using seat belt, driving over speed limits, jumping over walls, leaving parcels next door, working from the front of the van, running on delivery, stretching over walls to deliver next door and many more !!!

Unless we all get together and agree to do our jobs properly nothing will change. Its the classic divide and rule. Without support, it is very difficult facing the crap you will get, unless you have an extremely strong character. If you start doing every part of the job correctly, thus cutting off, you will have 2 managers breathing down your neck before you know it insinuating threats and pyschological bullying. People used to stick together much more than nowadays, probably due to dealing with two World Wars. Remember, the higher echelons, rulers, leaders and the rich, always want division down at the bottom and unfortunately, in this era, they have it in abundance. :cry

As i understand ,the old Morris Z vans that Royal Mail had way back had a wicker basket for mail rather than a passenger seat.

And mentioning Morris vans, back then the vans were made with the heavy use that Royal Mail would give them in mind, including rubber wings.

Nowadays we have plumbers vans that disintegrate with the the heavy use they get especially rural areas, and the idea of keeping the mail in the back has already caused problems with door locks packing up on combis and the new shape transit due to much more use than the designers expected.

The following is taken from a Royal Mail: Confidential Streetwise Presentation on What You can do to protect the mail.

Recent staistics show that two-thirds of recorded staff incidents were directly
attributed to the theft of mail left unattended in the street.

Don't leave your bag unattended ever - no matter how tempting it may be. So many
victims think it won't happen to them but it only takes a matter of seconds for a thief
to take the mail that you are responsible for. Mail due for delivery must always be in
the immediate proximity of, and be able to be viewed directly by the Delivery Officer,
when out on delivery.

When using a delivery trolley and difficulties are experienced due to the type of area
that you are delivering to, such as delivery to flats, reasonable steps must be taken
to reduce the risk of theft from the trolley, or the trolley itself. Lock the trolley, if this
cannot be done then transfer the contents to a delivery pouch, and leave the trolley empty.

Mails being conveyed by vehicle must not be left on view. All mail must be secured
in the rear of the vehicle. This is most important if you leave your vehicle to carry out
your delivery. Vehicles must be fully secured and locked when left unattended.
Just think - when you last went shopping, did you leave your credit cards or wallet on
the passenger seat of your car and then leave the keys in the ignition? Of course you
didn't, so why do so many people do this with mail, when using a Royal Mail vehicle
on delivery or collection.

It is most important that any incidents of crime against Royal Mail, are reported to the
Royal Mail Security Call Centre, the Delivery Office Manager has the number to call.
Unless incidents are reported, the local Investigation Security teams are unaware of
the problems that you are facing, when out on delivery.

Hopefully by following the guidelines and advice that we have given to you this
morning, you should be more aware when you go out on delivery, and therefore
become less of a target from criminals.

Right what do I do, I drive a Combo crew cab and there just isn't enough room in the back section for all the mail never mind the packets. Also as it has rear windows you can still see packets or parcels even if in the back. I asked for a bigger van or a Combo without rear seats and was told tough use what you've got, so can I refuse to take out all the mail if I can't fit it in the rear section ? I don;t normally accelerate anyone this is just one duties mail and packets.

They want it both ways, following RM guidelines and finishing in time.

You can only have one or the other not both.

if there is a excess OT then the duty needs looking at.

We have a same kind of vehicle on a rural with windows all around, the postman lodged a grievance as this vehicle does not correspond to the guidelines provided by RM on mail integrity. You need a disclaimer m8 if anything got nicked at least you have it in writing.
