Armed robbers raided a village post office – only to discover it had closed down last year as part of Government cutbacks.

Two men, wearing hooded tops and wielding a gun and a machete, walked into Dennis Ingrey’s shop in Stanton St John, Oxfordshire, last Wednesday and demanded he open up his sub post office and empty the till.

But a bemused Mr Ingrey had to explain that the post office, which
featured twice in ITV’s Midsomer Murders, had regrettably been a
victim of the Government’s nationwide cuts.

The post office, which closed in June last year, had even been visited by Tory leader David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson as part of their campaign to keep post offices in rural areas open.

Mr Ingrey said: ‘They were shouting “open the post office”. I told them we didn’t have a flipping post office – the Government closed it down last summer. They were six months too late.

‘It was really bizarre. At the time I thought they were idiots for not seeing we didn’t have a post office.

‘The first guy was pointing a gun at me. I couldn’t tell if it was real but
I couldn’t take a chance.’

When the robbers realised their mistake they stole about £500 from the shop’s till before grabbing a handful of cigarettes and fleeing.

Mr Ingrey, 58, and his wife Mollie, 64, began running the store 18 months ago. If the robbers had struck six months earlier, they could have made away with about £6,000, added Mr Ingrey.

The Government closed 22 rural post offices in Oxfordshire last year as part of a nationwide cull of 2,500 offices.

The move – an attempt to reduce the £150million-a-year subsidy propping up the rural post office network – has been condemned by MPs and campaigners as divisive and damaging to communities.

The robbers were both male and are described as white, slim and in their 20s. One of them is about 5ft 8in and the other is slightly shorter. They were both wearing hooded tops, one grey and the other blue.

There have been at least 16 armed robberies in Oxfordshire in the past six weeks and police are keeping an open mind as to whether this latest raid is linked to those.

Georgina Moore, a magistrate and chairman of Stanton St John Parish Council, said: ‘For this to happen in the heart of the village is terrifying.

‘I suppose some people just don’t keep up with the news or read the papers. Despite the fact we’ve had Boris Johnson and David Cameron up here, it must have passed them by.’

Incorrect, the closures were because the subsidy was reduced by 40 million from 190 to 150 million pounds.

By robbing Post Offices they are also killing it, They are also users of the services as I am sure they like to post parcela nd packets through them, they shoudl be banned form using the sevrice as well as a lengthy jail term, no post for them in jail and no mobiles will drive them loopy.
