A ROGUE postman who dumped thousands of letters and parcels in a side street was jailed yesterday.

Ex-footballer Gordon Lappin, 27, was given four months after admitting ditching 16 bags of mail near his home.

Lappin, who played for Queens Park and Greenock Juniors, also pleaded guilty to dumping another 653 pack ages at different locations between August 2007 and last February.

Sheriff John Herald said: "This was a substantial amount of mail, over 5000 pieces, and I would be failing in my public duty if I didn't impose a custodial sentence.

"You were an experienced employee and your behaviour was a gross breach of trust.

"There could have been anything in this mail, important hospital test results, chequebooks or money."

Gerry Keenan, defending, said Lappin, from Greenock, had suffered from depression after the breakdown of his nine-year relationship.

He added: "He was denied access to his young son as a result.

"This had a very traumatic effect and he began drinking to excess.

"It was a matter of the roof coming in on him."

I suppose RM's policy on dishonesty doesn't extend all the way to the top of the tree. It's annoying when we (workers) would demand stiffer penalties for dishonesty, only for the courts to show leniency, but then again as the country is run by crooks, for crooks, what else can we expect?
